Do the garbage teams in Europe and Asia resort to as much goonery as we see in CONCACAF?

No. CONCACAF is special in that regard.

Also, I really like the camera work by Fox today.

That's about all I like about this particular combination of players. Castillo and Gooch, if JK has any sense, should be getting crossed off the WC23 potential list right now.

I mentally had grouped in Corona with the other hispanic sprites like Torres, Orozco-Fizcal, and Castillo. He's got some size to him, and that was a great strike.

Is Onyewu considered a disappointment or a sad case of injuries taking away from his potential? Seems like this guy was being marketed as a rising star a few years ago.

He's a combination of injuries, disappointment, and being on the downside of his career. 31 is getting old for international soccer, so this would be his last World Cup cycle to contribute. The injuries/disappointing production have robbed him of even that.

That tackle on Diskerud needs to be a card or someone's gonna get hurt.

Yeah, it was just really bad luck, too. In his prime he dominates the confederations cup, dominates qualifying, makes the huge next level jump to AC Milan and then tears his mcl. An already not very quick guy gets even slower and he just never regained his form.

Wondo is a bum slayer extraordinaire. He's gonna Torres this thing and win the golden boot on the strength of two or three games.

I'm glad we have players like him - great story, great MLS player and good for games like these, but fools gold vs world class competition.

Yeah, he's finishing goals from 3 yards out against teams with like 2 professionals on it. Everyone needs to be prepared for him to slam against the wall of reality as soon as he starts being defended by competent players.

This tournament is still all about Donovan, Holden, Mix and Shea. Mix and LD have been really good. Holden wasn't good today, and Shea looks drunk.

His move to AC Milan turned out to be almost a career killer too.

I will say that I was impressed with a couple of those flick finishes he's had on crosses, and in defense of his chances, Edson Buddle was on the 23 man roster in 2010.

That said, it's hard to see a spot for Wondoloski right now, with Altidore and Gomez entrenched, Boyd and Johnson being chosen for qualifiers, and Donovan and Dempsey as forward-capable attacking midfielders. Worth noting that he's pretty clearly going to get that chance ahead of a McInerney or Bruin if things change in the next 8 months though, all it would take is an injury to one player and maybe a lack of form from another.

Spot the yank pt 2!

Julian Green, the 17 year old one one, not the Cubs lobbyist at Chicago city hall, has been playing and training with Bayern's first team and has been singled out by Pep as one to watch. Time to think about a cap. It's going to take a huge commitment from USS, like bringing him to Brazil, to pry him from Germany who won't take him until the '18 cycle. He's a left winger with tons of pace. He's described as a refined DeMarcus Beasley. Similar size but tons of class on the ball and finishing.

Unlike a lot of the germanicans, his dad seems to be pushing hard for the US and Julian has spent a bunch of time in the US.

He's got a shot to be the last forward taken; it really depends on what happens with our other mids I think. If Holden works out for example, that's one less mid you need to take since he can play as an inverted wing.

Right now, he's a bumslayer for me. But he's giving himself a chance. I still think he's not good enough against mid level opposition and higher.

So are we done with the centennial jersey or are they using the red/white hoops just for the Gold Cup? I hope they bring them back for qualifying in September.

Wynalda is such a weirdo.

Also, PTFC's crowd is so great. Legitimately great. All of the Cascadia teams have fantastic support.

I wish the Fire had even half that.

After today's results, there's a very good chance that the USMNT will play Martinique in the Gold Cup quarters if they beat Costa Rica (only way they wouldn't is if Cuba/Belize wins by 4).

@GrantWahl USA lineup: Johnson; Parkhurst, Orozco, Goodson, Beasley; Holden, Diskerud; Bedoya, Donovan, Torres; Wondolowski.

Wow, Cuba got the 4th just as the officials ended the game, so they advance to face Panama, and El Salvador will play the US/Costa Rica winner.
