1)Shut Prior down for the season and give him one more chance in '07.

2)Shut DLee down for the rest of the year so he can come back next year and be 100%

3)Do something with Kid K.

  • a)Cut Him
    b)Convert him to a reliever
c)Convert him to a 3rd baseman or outfielder

how are you going to convert him to a reliever when he is hurt for the rest of the year?

it's not like they're going to resign him.

The biggest thing with Prior right now is his control. I cant seehow not allowing him to pitch is going to fix that. Might as well let him work thru it. Its not like hes in pain right?
I am willing to go out on a limb and say he is in pain. and the reason i say to shut him down is because then he can come to spring training next year ready to prove himself.

as for Wood.

He would have to get work down in the minor leagues to become a reliever... so we should send him on a rehab assignment for the rest of the year... and resign him to a lower priced deal and give him a chance as a reliever.

Also, no point in trying to make Wood a position player, especially OF or 3B where offense is typically needed. His most value is at pitcher if he can stay healthy, whether he be a reliever or starter. I am not convinced that it will ever happen but I don't see the point in trying to convert a 29 year old pitcher into a position player. What could his ceiling possibly be as a postion player? Bench player? A player who next season (after June) will be entering the wrong side of 30, just to be a bench player? I'd rather take my chances he can become a solid reliever.

Kerry has a career .197 avg... the key is that is as a pitcher.

I think if he were a position player it would be somewhere between .260 and .300 thats good enough to be a starting player. Maybe my train of thought is incorrect tho.. I am not sure

He has a career .197 OBP. If that still becomes .260 to .300 (A big if anways) thats no good, at all. Even if his AVG could get up to .260 I wouldn't expect more than .300 OBP. That doesnt convert to starter numbers and he would need .450+ SLG to be a semi-useful bench player.

And we don't know if he can even reach those numbers. He may still become a decent starter. If anything a reliever, but no way he becomes a position player.

The Cubs should not count on Wood to be healthy in any capacity. Anything he gives us should be considered gravy. Same for Prior. I agree on shutting down Lee. The season is over. Plus, you can play Walker and Nevin and let them improve their stock for July 31 or even a waiver-wire deal.

I disagree about Prior.. I think he will be back next year.. and be able to contribute in a big way

That's what they say every year. And he's always hurt. When planning the team over the winter, don't count on him to be healthy. If he is, great. But plan on him not being healthy and have too many quality guys instead of too few guys.

Side Note- If there was a pitcher on this team who I thought could become a useful position player, any position, even as a starter, it would be Zambrano.

He had a .763 OPS last year. Better than Walker, Pierre, Murton, and Cedeno this year. He didn't take a walk, but work on that patience a little and give him full time BP he could become a force! Whos else is on the "Play Zambrano at 1B, After We showcase Nevin and Walker for the Trade Deadline, to give Lee days off, except the days before and following his starts" BANDWGN. :D  His schedule would be: Pitch-Rest-1B-1B-Rest. Pitch hitting available on days when he has extra rest because of off days.

Too bad he actually, you know stays healthy and does his job.

I agree there... the should plan with him pencled in as the 6th starter.. and if he is healthy bump him up to 5th starter and put one of the youngsters in the pen as a long reliever.

I've been saying this all along. I said this in 2005, and I PRODOMINANTLY said it this year. BTW who are we talking about? :D Kerry or Prior, it doesn't matter. Point stands for both of them really.

petition to ban rolleyes

Rolleyes have their time and place. Rarely do I see them used correctly.

And more than one rolleye is never neccessary, under any circumstance.

(waiting to get a multiple eyeroll response from gilesbro on this one)

Fireing Hendry isnt the answer.. he is the only one willing to take blame.. I dont hear Baker taking any blame for making mangarial mistakes.. and I dont think a firesale is the answer either.

I don't think a full firesale is a good idea, but just those guys who aren't in our plans past this year and maybe even next. So I'm not advocating trading Lee and Zambrano. But I say trade away guys rather than letting them just walk and hoping maybe for some draft compensation.

As far as firing Hendry, I don't recall him specifically taking blame. Not saying he didn't, but I don't remember it. If he did, I'm glad, but it may be too little too late.

Hendry wont be let go anyways.. he just singed an extension that keeps him here through the 2008 season. And he did say that it was not Bakers fault but rather his for not giving Baker the right personel to play on a day to day basis. I will see if I can find the news article.

About the firesale... can I ask for some names you would be willing to trade?????

Definite:

Nevin

Williamson

Maddux

Jones

Probable:

Walker

Pierre

Possible:

Dempster

Eyre/Howry (wouldn't do both)

Dump as part of bigger deals if you can:

Niefi

Mabry

Blanco

Novoa

Rusch

Then you could use Murton or Cedeno if it is neccessary to net a top notch prospect. Theres also Wood whos kind of tricky because his value is at an all time low, but if we think there is no chance at him coming back then you might as well trade him for whatever low-level prospect you can and hope you find a diamond in the rough. I'd lean towards keeping him around at a very reduced salary.

Those aren't firesale type names, but I think of it as a firesale in the sense that you would be seeing a big turnover in roster.

Basically the only players not up for grabs are Z, Lee, Aramis, the young SP(unless blown away of course), Barrett. Guys kept unless needed to complete a bigger deal Eyre, Howry, Dempster, Cedeno, Murton, Ohman.

I agree on Trading Nevin and Williamson. Also, I would trade Walker, Novoa, Rusch, Perez, and Ohman as well. I might trade Mabry or just let him finish the year.. since he is only on a one year deal.

I would not trade Pierre. Simply because of how much we gave up to get him. I am definately not trading Dempster, Howry, or Eyre for any reason. I definately would not trade Blanco.. Hank White.... because he is one of the better backup catchers in the game.
