Bill Mazeroski is in the HOF with a career OBP under .300 and having never put up an OPS+ over 100. Ron Santo isn't.

He wasn't good defensively either.

I assume you're being sarcastic, since Mazeroski is perhaps the best defensive second baseman of all time. That's all well and good, but a career OBP under .300 is what it is - terrible. And if you're going to let Maz in the HOF because of his defensive prowess, what about Santo's five Gold Gloves at third base? He wasn't exactly a butcher either.

For fear of hijacking the thread, I don't think he belongs because in addition to being inadequat offensively, I do not think Maz was good defensively. He may have a nice number of Gold Glove awards, but I think that probably speaks more to the overall lack of talent at that position during his era. I think he had 23 errors one year that he won.

Edit: After further review, he won the GG twice with 23 errors.

I'm not a "in the good old days" type guy but IMO scorekeepers actually gave players errors for balls they should have caught unlike the modern scorekeepers that are threatened when they say it's an error. I also think that's a small reason why ERA's were better then.
