Matt Matulia with a 1-out single in the 6th inning to break up the perfect game.

But Jackson gave up another HR in the bottom of the 5th, so the score is now 4-0 with 2 outs in the top of the 6th.

Reds prospect Homer Bailey threw 6 no-hit innings in his second start at AA. He has since been relieved by Carlos Alvarado who threw a hitless 7th inning.

Callix Crabbe hits a solo HR off David Shafer with 1 out in the 9th to break up the attempted 4-pitcher no-hitter. Chattanooga still wins and Homer Bailey has thrown 12 shutout innings since being promoted to AA.

Peoria wins 6-4 in 10. In Miller's rehab start, he went 4 innings allowing 4 hits, 1 ER, 0 BB's, and had 2 K's. Estrada allowed 2 hits and 2 runs in only 1/3 of an inning. Evenson allowed 2 hits, 1 run, and had 3 K's in 2 and 2/3's of an inning. Rayborn went an inning and a third allowing 1 hit, 2 BB's, and 1 K. Scott Koerber picked up the win to go 4-1 on the season as he closed out the 9th and sent it to extra innings by retiring the two batters he faced. Matt Avery picked up his 5th save of the season as he allowed 2 hits and had a K in the 10th.

And I was just getting used to winning...

Notes:

1) I think Samardzija is going to be good, but he was a bit wild tonight. He coasted through the first two batters before giving a wind aided homerun to right. After that he seemed to lose it a bit and hit three batters over the next inning and a third. The scoreboard radar had him at 89, but as noted last night I think this radar is slow. I would love to see him pitch after he has a few games under his belt.

2) Alfred Joseph is definately a sleeper prospect. Tonight he makes a tremedous diving catch in right. Then he guns a runner out at third. His drive scored Lewis for Boise's lone run. It was ruled an error, but could have easily been ruled a double.

3) During the ninth number 20 was the catcher for the Hawks. Number 20 is Bernard! Has he given up on pitching already??

4) Cowart was the star of the day. He has a wierd delivery. Croutched with a wide stance, he makes almost no stride what-so-ever. Little velocity (scoreboard had him in the 70's. But the Hawks just could not hit him. They seemed to be swinging above the pitch (a sinker, forkball??), whatever it was he only gave up 1 hit through 6.

#20 on the Hawks is now Mario Mercedes, Bernard is back down in Mesa and I believe he pitched in today's game down there.

Thanks.

Yeah that's Mercedes, he was called up today. Boise now has 3 catchers on the roster. Bernard pitched for Mesa on Monday.

Will you get another chance to see the Hawks this season? Any notes on Samardzija's slider?

It was amusing hearing the Boise PBP guy trying to describe Cowart's delivery.

I know he got hit hard, but how did Brett Jackson look?

Maybe. Boise plays in Eugene in August I believe, but that is a bit of a drive and I have several conferences that I need to attend during that time interval.

I have a tough time with pitch recognition. But I don't think I saw much of his slider. My impression was that he was relying almost exclusively on his fastball. Almost all of the radar readings were in the high 80's. So unless his slider is the same speed as his fastball... My understanding is that he hasn't pitched for awhile.

I know he got hit hard, but how did Brett Jackson look?

Jackson was an enigma. He would look good against a couple of batters and then bam. The radar had him in the mid-80's. SK was the home team and was using their knowledge of their park to their advantage they, as a team, were hitting high flys to right (the direction of the wind). In my memory, only Joseph did this for the Hawks. So my impression of Jackson is that he had decent, not spectacular stuff, but that he needs to vary his pitches more. Once he got a couple of batters out they got a good read on what he was doing. He also needs to pitch for the conditions. If the wind is gusting towards right, he needs to pitch accordingly. But this is why we have minor leagues.

The right-hander struggled through two innings on the road and Northwest League West Division leader Salem-Keizer took advantage with a 6-1 victory.

The 6-foot-6 Samardzija threw 33 pitches — 20 for strikes — and allowed two earned runs on three hits and hit three batters.

Samardzija, a fifth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame, retired the first two batters in the first inning before surrendering a solo home run to Will Thompson.

Salem-Keizer (8-1) added its second run of the game in the second inning when Brad Boyer singled home Henry Gutierrez, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

The Volcanoes hit their second and third home runs of the game off Brett Jackson and extended their lead to 6-0 through six innings.

D.J. Lewis tripled and scored on Alfred Joseph's double for Boise's lone run in the top of the seventh.
