Maybe this should be in the minors discussions, but since he's coming up to take Barrett's spot when he serves the suspension I thought I'd post it here.

What is his reputation defensively? I like Barrett as much as the next guy, but I'm also interested in seeing what some of the young guys can do...If he performs well I'd like to see Soto up as the #2 catcher next year, and take over the main job the year after that...not sure if that's realistic but I think its time to start considering it....at the very least he can replace Blanco's .051 average for far less than the 1.5 mil we're paying Hank...Seriously, wow...I just realized we're paying Blanco 1.5 million, add that to the overpayment of Neifi, and Rusch and we'd have enough $ for a very good bench guy just from what they are being overpaid...

Anyway, I'm hijacking my own post....What is the rap on Soto's defense?

Where did you hear that he would come up? We aren't allowed to replace Barrett with anyone while he's on his suspension so someone else would have to be brought down. Unless it was reported somewhere otherwise I think we are going to have Blanco playing every game with Mabry as the emergency catcher.

It was in an article last week that the Cubs would bring Soto up and I asked the question then who would go down since the Cubs have to play with 24 men while Barrett is out but I got no responses. I suspect Soto will come up and sit on the bench like most everyone else from Iowa does. Then if Blanco gets hurt he will play. I really don't consider Mabry an option unless it's a dire emergency.

Sorry to the original question. I have no idea about his defense.

There is no way that Soto is not called up when Barrett serves his suspension. You do not leave one catcher on a roster, you are asking for trouble.

He is noted as being a very good defensive catcher and there is no way he could be as bad as Blanco has been with the bat this year.

There is not a chance they will do this. They will have a real backup catcher when Barrett sits. They will have to send somebody down to make room for whoever it is, but there will be one. And Soto's name has been in every article that has been written about the subject.

From what I have observed, he is a pretty good defensive catcher. He's no Piazza at the plate, but he's no Blanco either. I'd like to see him starting and having Hank as the backup while Barrett is out for a week.

With Dusty managing what are the odds of that happening?

Slim to none, but I'd still like to see it.

I'm guessing Soto will get about 4 at-bats while he's up when Barrett serves his suspension. We all know Dusty is going to give all the at-bats to the veteran Blanco. Soto might get a start if there's a day game after a night game. That's pretty much his only chance.

He's doomed under Dusty. The man's offensive value is in his patience (which is pretty good), as his power is pretty much non-existent.

How does Soto compare to someone like a Yadier Molina? Both are excellent defensive catchers with good patience but little power. I haven't seen Soto play be it seems like a likely comparison to me.

Based on what I've seen, Molina profiles a bit better offensively and defensively. Since Molina figures to be a defensive catcher who won't hit very much, Soto probably profiles as a pretty decent backup.
