I can't find anything that better explains the problem with this team. As in, not how they are playing right now, but how they were constructed and expected to play. This, sadly enough, was sort of 'the idea' with this team.

I gave up all sane hope for a playoff run in June last year, I held back doing so when we signed Jones in the offseason, maybe I was too cautious. This team is even worse than I expected them to be, which is pretty sad.

Meanwhile Cubs pitchers threw 146 pitches in only eight innings.

Some things never change. How is it possible that the organization hasn't picked up on this? Everyone in baseball talks about getting pitch counts up, getting into the other teams bullpen and OBP but the Cubs management is oblivious to this idea.

Shmidt was coming off of a complete game shutout in his last start.

I pointed this out in the game thread but it bears repeating here.

Shmidt is one of those rare pitchers that you have to be somewhat agreesive with. You have to look for a hitable fastball early in the count and hope you don't miss it. The reason is his change is so devistating. Moreover, he rarely walks people, although this year his walk totals are up a bit from historic levels.

The Cubs offense is real bad, but Shmidt was on last night for the second start in a row.

I agree with you. Too many people look at pitch count and automatically think that Cub hitters were swinging at bad pitches. Last night, Schmidt was around the plate a lot more than what I've seen of him in the past. Yeah, there were some second pitch swings at balls out of the strike zone, but even with that he was around the plate a lot more than usual. Because of that the most pitches he probably would've thrown was 110.

Schmidt is pretty darn good when he's on, and he was pretty much on last night. The pitch count doesn't bother me, because like dalgreen said, he was around the plate all night with every hitter. I can't think of too many bad pitches that our hitters chased (well, Jones just sprung to mind, but that's no surprise).

They look terrible at the plate. They are at two strikes in a flash. When you're in a rut like this, you need to get on base. Quit swinging at garbage and take a walk. Or at least wait for a better pitch. It's not even like they're swinging for the fences... they're just swinging at junk.

Schmidt was throwing strikes last night. There weren't a lot of bad pitches to take that would have been called balls.

Do the Cubs even know the difference between a ball and a strike?

Even if you attribute last night to Schmidt being "on" there is no way around the fact that we've now had like 4-5 complete games pitched against us...several of them being shutouts...and most all of them having the opposing pitcher throw less than 110 pitches.

I agree that looking at those stats, and nothing else, you basically can tell what the problem is with this team.

agree, unfortunately he is always on against us, he is now taken Randy Johnson place on the list of pitchers cubs can't beat.
