There are clearly two factions within the board: those who lean towards rationalism (and thus criticism of the Cubs organizatio), and those who don't (and tend not to criticize as much).

I

Woah woah. Are you saying those that criticise the Cubs organizations are rational and those that don't are irrational?

I think he/she means rational in the philosophical sense. It is a clash of world views.

If you don't like a certain poster or their views just IGNORE them. If you don't like a thread on how much Neifi sucks, IGNORE it. How difficult is it. No one is asking you to join in on the booing, no one is asking you to agree with their assessment of any particular subject. This is a place for debate and to voice your opinion. Peace out

This general statement is prevelant on EVERY message board I post on -

Phish, NSBB, Chicago Bears, Badgermaniac etc. and I think it's an oversimplification.

I think

1) It's not easy to ignore threads and posts - that's the reason why we are ON a message board to begin with.

2) It's a discussion board so if people think Neifi sucks they are gonna say so, and if people don't like that thread they are gonna voice THAT opinion. You can't only expect one side to voice opinions - all sides will.

I am not saying you can't respond to it if you disagree, but to tell another poster they need to not be negative isn't helping the situation. If you don''t think someone sucks, fine say that but to complain that other poster are negative, it is best to just ignore that aspect.

The key difference here is, one side doesn't like an aspect of the Cubs, and the other side doesn't like that a thread exists talking about that dislike of an aspect of the Cubs. It's one thing to see a discussion that says:

A:Neifi sucks.

B:He is not as bad as you think because of X Y and Z.

And it's entirely different to see:

A: Neifi sucks.

B: How many more times do we have to hear crap like this?

People should be free to discuss the team however they want. Nobody should go around telling people they can't bring up a certain topic, assuming that topic is at least Cubs related. If somebody wants to vent by saying Neifi sucks, there is no reason why somebody else has to stop by and blast that poster.

Everybody can have an opinion, but when one's opinion is "you shouldn't be able to talk about that anymore", then that can lead nowhere but to confrontation. If somebody says "optimistic Cubs fans are blind idiots", then you can talk about the merits of that post even existing. But as long as somebody is keeping their topics on the Cubs (organization, front office, players, coaches), then I just don't see any justification for attacking that person for having that opinion.

You know what I think it really comes down to? People just getting sick of hearing about how bad Neifi is. At least that's it to me. I don't like Neifi, I don't want Neifi, I hope he gets traded or retires. I know he sucks. I know he's an awful hitter. Reading it grates on people like me, who realize how bad he is, but get sick of seeing every thread become a State of the Neifury. (A prime example is the Neifi's catch and ball flip). In fact I probably have the SAME opinion about neifi as the people I argue with, I just get tired of seeing unrelated threads morph into Neifi threads. Does that help you understand better?

I agree with you that everyone should have an opinion though.

It would be nice to have every thread turn into a Murton Man-Love thread though, just for a change.

[thread jack]

So Murton is a stud isn't he? Struggles, starts taking the ball the other way. I want to start the official Matt Murton fan club. [/thread jack]

I understand, but I also disagree with what a lot of people define as "unrelated". A lot of threads can related to the offense, which Neifi negatively affects when he is involved. Plus, I know it's exaggeration, but it's nowhere near "every thread" that turns into a Neifi topic. If somebody throws a Neifi comment into a seemingly unrelated topic, typically it will be followed by no more than 1 or 2 other posts referencing in some form of aggreement. If people let it go, viewing it as a Cubs fan venting, the original topic will probably take over. But when people respond to those 1 or 2 comments about Neifi (or whatever side issue) by saying how stupid it is to bring that up and how some people can never be happy and always have to crap in other people's cereal bowls, then that is when the thread is going to disintigrate.

Instead of spending time being critical of how other fans display their fandom, talk about the topics you do want to talk about. If somebody pops in what you perceive as an unrelated unnecessary jab at the team, leave it be and stick with the topic at hand. Or if you disagree with the assertion, explain why. But it doesn't solve anything to tell people they shouldn't write about a topic that relates to the Cubs, just because it bothers them.

Oh, and uh yeah, Murton is awesome.

My apologies. I took one philosophy class in college and it was NOT my forte.

I think the problem a lot of people have with this board is that the ones that disagree are usually banned. Banned even for petty things. I might get banned for saying this. If I never post on here again, then you'll know I got banned. For this. This harmless paragraph. I'm prepared, though. Don't cry for me. I'll be ok. There are other boards than this one. When you speak of me, fellas, speak well.

this isn't true. there's plenty of disagreement on here. those that blatantly attack the other posters over and over are eventually banned, but you're not banned for disagreeing with someone.

Yes, the ones that disagree with the member guidelines are banned.

That is internet folk lore propageted by people who were banned here posting on other boards. I read many boards, but this is the only one I post on becuase of the moderators. And they are more than tolerant of discussion and disagreement. I've read stuff from people who were banned here saying exactly what you wrote. But what they got banned for was continuing to flaut the rules of the borad.

I remember quite a while ago engaging in a debate with someone here over something. Can't remember what it was about. After I made one post, I decided that it was way, way too inflamatory and offensive - possibly to the point of insinuating that whoever I was debating with was stupid - so I went back and edited it. Regretfully, my debate partner had already read and commented on the pre-edited post ... but I didn't get banned, so I have to figure that there's at least some deliberation involved before banning someone.

I'm sorry everyone. I'll never bring up what I previously wrote ever again. Can we PLEASE forget it ever happened? Let's go over more better things. Can we talk about Adam Dunn now? He's got piercing eyes and a natural, easygoing walk that I could watch for 162 games.

Unless posters blatently violate the Member Guidelines, I don't think anyone is banned without a warning.

I don't know if I would classify it as "groupthink" but there are certain posters that get preferential treatment, who are very sarcastic, patronizing, and condescending when they disagree with others - but either they've been around forever or they know the moderators. Because when others post in a similar manner - they get warned right away while these folk don't.

But it isn't group think necessarily.

I was posting an old joke. I hope it didn't upset you.

Please know that no one here wants to see anyone banned unless they are repeatedly violating the board rules, and everyone here welcomes debate. However, NSBB is a place you have to bring you "A" game, and back up your arguments. It's not that dissent isn't tolerated, it's that poor arguments get stomped in favor of reasoned ones...

Gunned got what he deserved, KurtEvans. Go photoshop something and LEAVE US ALONE!

Adam Dunn only eats meat that's died of natural causes because he doesn't wanna hurt any of God's creatures. That's documented, people.

I don't think people get banned for first time offenses, unless it's blatant and/or the only thing they've typed. And people often get close to the line and get warned. And I really don't know what Gunned's history is. He/she doesn't ring a bell as somebody who routinely ignores the rules of the board and makes inappropriate posts.

See now you're not discussing anything, you're just mocking the board as a whole, some of whom really don't care for Adam Dunn.
