Aside from Lee's unfortunate accident, I was wondering if we are having far more serious injuries than other teams - or is that just because of a subjective point of view ?

I remember when Prior was way overused by Baker a few years ago, with many people here saying he (Baker) was risking his (Prior) health. And I can't exactly say he's been very healthy for such a young guy.

So, is this just bad luck or is the club just not taking good care of their players ? Theoretically speaking a 20 year old pitcher should be less injury prone than a 40 year of pitcher.

Why am I saying this ?

Well, the italian soccer (excuse me: football) team AC Milan have had many long term injuries to some of their very expensive signings.

A few years ago, they started to seriously analyze this and found out that a few thing influenced the risc of injuries - one of the biggest reasons was the food they consumed during their 'off time'.

Their players are now obliged to report all the food they eat (from dinners to candy) and guess what ? Now they hardly have any injuries anymore.

I'm just wondering if this team should take better care of Wood and Prior.

Any thoughts ?

There are a couple of issues at play here. It is possible that Prior was overused a few years ago he was very young and just starting out, at the college level guys do not play as long a season and so a lot of times their arms haven't been conditioned to the strains of a long major league season yet, so it can be important I think to not over use them right away, because I think it can cause problems but that I'm sure is a player to player issue and it could be what has been wrong with Prior. It is a fact that Wood was over used at the highschool level which has led to his arm problems. As for position players I think one of the biggest current factors in todays game for injuries is guys are just big and more muscular than they use to be and when you have more muscles, you have more muscles to hurt. Conditioning should be very important and guys should be staying loose during games by riding a stantionary bike etc. to prevent their muscles from tensing up, which would cut down on hamstring injuries etc. but most of them don't do it.

How come you get all these crazy injuries in baseball and the only things you see in the NBA are broken hand/thumbs (usually from practice), knee injuries (from wear and tear of jumping over 10 years), and foot/ankle injuries (usually from wear and tear over years or stepping on someone's foot). Maybe a broken nose here or there too (but that doesn't put someone on the DL).

I gotta think conditioning is a huge part of it. Baseball is way behind basketball and football in this area.

The steroid era definitely increases the risk of muscle tears, as well, even if guys are off them now.

The Cubs do have rotten luck and I do not like the way Baker handles the pitchers and I had his line-ups and double switches most of the time, but as for injuries in general, all teams have had an increase in the amount of injuries over the past 10 years or so and that is mostly due to guys working out in the gym more and being more muscular. If guys are just big because their fat well its kind of hard to hurt fat but muscles on the other hand are easy to tweak.
