Phelps Promoted to Daytona, Rayborn Joins Chiefs

First roster move of 2006

PEORIA, IL— The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that Michael Phelps has been promoted to High-A Daytona while Justin Rayborn will join the Chiefs from Extended Spring Training in Mesa, AZ.

Phelps, a 21-year old right-hander, allowed three runs in three appearances for the Chiefs so far in 2006. The Hazelwood, MO native was perfect in his first two outings before allowing three runs against Quad Cities in the home opener on Thursday night. He also left the Chiefs in August 2005 in a promotion to Daytona as well.

Rayborn joins the Chiefs from Extended Spring Training. He was 2-1 with a save and a 2.09 ERA in Mesa last year while pitching in the Arizona Rookie League. The 23 year old right-hander tossed 26 innings in 13 appearances, all out of the bullpen. He joined the Cubs as a non drafted free agent in June 2005 after playing college ball at the University of South Alabama.

Rayborn is expected to join the Chiefs in Beloit, WI today in time for the 6:30 PM contest that begins a four game series against the Snappers. This is the first change to the Chiefs roster since the Opening Day roster was announced on April 3rd.

The Chiefs face the Snappers Monday through Thursday this week before returning home for a weekend four game series against the Burlington Bees. On Friday April 21st and Saturday April 22nd, all fans will receive 2006-07 Peoria Chiefs calendars all weekend while supplies last. Sunday April 23rd is the first Family Fun Day at O’Brien Field with kids allowed to run the bases after the game and a post-game team autograph session on the concourse. The series with the Bees finishes on Monday April 24th with Mountain Dew Half-Price Monday.

Thanks, JAXX! Man, bummer for Cash. Misses two years, basically, then pitched one gem and it's right back to the DL.

So, any guess what the rotation plan is? Shaver to Jaxx rotation? (He's basically been stretched out long in Hagerty-relief anyway, so it's not like he isn't ready to pitch long...). Or Shaver to relief (his likely big-league role...) with Pigs or Cherry or somebody with less big-league potential going in rotation?

Good questions. I'm sure that Ron will make it a point to go over all of the moves tonight on the pregame show and during the Jaxx broadcast.

For the record (shameless plug) everyone that posts in the Minor League Discussion/Box Score thread during the Jaxx broadcast tonight is eligible to win a Jaxx shirt!
