Pirates placed first baseman Sean Casey on the 15-day disabled list with two fractures of the transverse process in his left lower back.

Casey is expected to miss six to eight weeks with the injury, which will not require surgery. Since Brad Eldred remains in Triple-A, Craig Wilson will be the Pirates' everyday first baseman until Casey returns. The Pirates will get better offensively with the switch, and Wilson should have value in shallow mixed leagues until Casey returns.

Mabry is a beast. Elbow to the back (unintentional) takes out one of the few big bats the Pirates have. Brutal.

That isn't really all that bad of an injury, I've got a friend who had the transverse process of one of his vertebrae chipped off completely in football. The doctors couldn't even find it in him so he just kept playing.

Last year in football I broke several of the pedicules in my lower back...and that wasn't fun at all.

Maybe now this will actually force Tracy to play Craig Wilson consistently.

The sad irony is that I had originally drafted Wilson as a nice utility outfielder/first baseman for my fantasy team. Once I realized he wasn't going to get much playing time I dropped him and traded Bengie Molina for Casey to fill my vacancy in the infield. In essence, I gave up Molina and Wilson for nothing.

Unfortunately Wilson is a much much much bigger bat than Casey.

I wouldn't say that. I think Wilson is the better player b/c of consistency and he'll be good for a 800-850 OPS. Casey is all over the place, probably 780-925 OPS. Lots of potential, but little consistency. It certainly doesn't help your ballclub to lose Casey for several months. Wilson is a great fallback option though.
