Chiefs Cap Exciting Game with 2-Run 10th

Norwood, Taylor go deep in win

Cedar Rapids, IA – The Peoria Chiefs came from behind last and beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels 7-5 in 10 innings Monday afternoon. With the win the Chiefs have their first win streak of the season and are over .500 at 3-2 for the first time in 2006.

Brandon Taylor put the Chiefs up for good when he rocketed the first pitch of the 10th inning over the left field wall for a solo homer and a 6-5 lead. Mark Reed followed with a double and moved to third on a fielders choice grounder. With two outs, Johnny Defendis took off for second and when the Kernels catcher threw to second, Reed scampered home for a 7-5 Chiefs lead.

Roberto Sotolongo came on and closed the door on Cedar Rapids after allowing a one out single for his first professional save. The win went to Jesse Estrada, his first of the year. Estrada allowed three runs and six hits over two innings but picked up the win in extra innings.

Cedar Rapids pounced on Chiefs starter Mitch Atkins in the top of the first inning. With one out, Hainley Statia drew a walk and scored on a long double off the bat of Pat Reilly. Reilly stole third and came home to make it 2-0 on a sacrifice fly by Mark Trumbo.

The Chiefs came right back in the top of the 2nd to cut the deficit in half. Ryan Norwood led off by slamming a first pitch fastball from Bobby Mosebach over the left-centerfield wall. The homer was his first and the team’s first of the 2006 season.

Cedar Rapids scored twice in the 8th against reliever Jesse Estrada, marking the first time all season the Chiefs bullpen has surrendered a run or a lead. With two outs, Statia singled to left and scored to tie the game 3-3 on a double by Reilly. Mark Trumbo followed with a bloop single to left to give the Kernels a 4-3 lead.

The Chiefs came right back in the 9th when Norwood doubled to left and Reed advanced to third as a pinch runner on Luis Rivera’s bunt single. Matt Ciaramella singled home Reed to tie the game 4-4 and after a flyout, Jake Muyco put the Chiefs up 5-4 with a single to center.

But again the Kernels came back in the home half of the 9th. Dallas Morris led off with a single and advanced to second on a sac bunt. Brett Martinez singled home Morris to tie the game and advanced to third on an error by Defendis in leftfield. Expecting a squeeze play, Jody Davis had Estrada pitch out and catcher Muyco tagged Martinez halfway between home and third for the second out. Larry Infante followed with a double and tried to score on a single by Brad Coon but he was thrown out at the plate by Defendis to send the game into extra innings.

Mitch Atkins started for the Chiefs and went five innings allowing two hits and two runs while striking out five. Matt Avery tossed two scoreless innings with one hit before Estrada and Sotolongo finished the game.

Pepsi Player of the Game

Brandon Taylor (3B) – Taylor’s solo shot to lead off the 10th proved to be the game winner. The third baseman also made two tough defensive plays and his sac fly in the 6th inning tied the game 2-2.

Notes…The Chiefs bullpen didn’t allow a run in 18 1/3 innings of work this season before Estrada allowed two in the 8th…Reed’s steal of home was the Chiefs first since Tyler Parker stole home at the same stadium April 8, 2004…The Chiefs are 1-0 in extra innings this season…Fergie Jenkins, who will be at O’Brien Field for the home opener on Thursday, was a radio guest in the 7th inning…RHP Donnie Veal (0-1) will start Tuesday at 6:30 PM against RHP Tommy Mendoza (0-1)…The broadcast begins with the pregame show on http://www.peoriachiefs.com at 6:15 PM.

Bye bye baseball!!!

Grand slam for Pie! Iowa up 4-2 in the 2nd.

Wow. Talk about coming out of the gates fast.

And that's what, 3 ABs with the bases loaded in his last 4 ABs? Maybe 5. You don't see that too often with a leadoff hitter.

By the way, there is video for that game.
