On some other message boards I frequent the moderators try to make sure that thread starters actually start a discussion (rather than simply post a link to an article, for example). I've seen many threads die because the first post is simply a hyperlink with no context, story or indication of what the article is about or why it was posted. The mods at these sites generally just delete the thread and PM you to say "you can post the article again if you start the conversation off".

Just an idea, thanks.

Interesting Idea, but I think if the article is worth talking about, there will be plenty of discussion reguardless of who starts it. Conversly, if its a subject no one cares about, someone could try all they want to start a discussion, and no one will care. So, to me, it seems like a wasted effort.

But to me, if I see a thread titled "Oh my god!" and the only thing in there is a link, I don't even bother with it. I'm not going to click random links that I know nothing about, especially when the thread title gives no clue.

so, instead of starting discussion, titles should be clearer in stating what's contained in the link
