Dusty Baker is covering his butt. Plain and simple.

And I seriously doubt there's a poster on this board--myself included--who wouldn't do the same thing.

Cover our respective butts, or ignore the obvious cloud around Bonds incredible stretching program? While it may be human nature to cover for ourselves, I think it is a difficult premise to suggest that all of us would approach the issue as Baker wants us to believe he did.

I think the way Baker has talked about the issue hurts his credibility more than what he actually did (or didn't) do.

I'm certainly not arguing the plausibility of Baker's recollection of his relationship with Bonds. I mean, he had to know the whole Bonds/steroid situation was going to resurface sometime. And this is the best he can come up with?

But for so many posters to suggest that if they were in Baker's shoes (while he was managing the Giants) they would have approached the matter differently doesn't ring true with me.

If you were Dusty, how would you answer the questions about Bonds and the book. I am not looking for generalisms or philosophies. Be specific, as though you were speaking to a reporter.

I am starting to believe the only clean end to this is banishing mcgwire, sosa, bonds etc from baseball and the record books. of course, no one seems to be able to prove anything. If one of these guys wants to be a hero and keeps kids off steroids, they need to come forward and admit their wrong and face the punishment. The idea of bonds playing mlb baseball again has become a farce - the game will have no integrity if he continues to play. bud has a major problem on his hands perhaps rivaling the throwing of games early in this century.

If you want to be technical about this, Steroids were not against the rules at the time Baker was managing Bonds, so even though he should have confronted him on it as a moral issue, he can hide behind the fact that it wasn't a legal issue (in terms of baseball rules, not federal law).

To be honest, Dusty is SO laid back about everything that I can actually believe that he didn't (and still doesn't) know anything about what's going on in the clubhouse. Baker probably hangs out in his office with Neifi and Macias while th rest of the team is in the main room.
