Frankly, I was just as disturbed by Dusty's quote about Cedeno pressing. We're barely into Spring Training, and it already seems like Dusty is setting the groundwork for Neifi's Big Takeover.

I think some of you are being too kind to Neifi. He doesn't come right out and say it, but I think his quotes clearly reflect that he relishes the prospect of Cedeno failing. I detect some nasty selfishness in that "let's see what happens" quote. If Walker produced quotes like this the media would be all over him.

I did pick that up. I think he's thinking that the Cubs will give Cedeno his shot, he'll stumble, and Dusty will turn to the veteran that "saved" them last season.

It's time to trade the malcontent~

Again, you have to blame Dusty for planting that seed in his head. I'm all for dumping Neifi the Worthless on the side of the road, but he's just a symptom of the disease that is Dustyball.

I would place just as much or more blame on Hendry. When you give a veteran an everyday player's salary and a multiyear committment you can't expect him to be happy about backing up a rookie, unless maybe it's some sort of can't-miss ARod type rookie.

Bruce Miles article

“I see Ronny pressing a little more, I think, than Matt,” Baker said. “Matt didn’t play winter ball, and Ronny did play winter ball. He had a great winter ball. Forget it and go on and be yourself. Every kid’s different. He’s got a lot of people around him who can help him. It’s all part of the learning process. He’ll be fine.”

That one seems much more benign that the Neifi quotes, which to me smack of a player trying to say the right things, but really letting how he feels slip out.

And there's enough blame to go around, between Hendry overpaying someone who should, at best, be a backup, and Dusty, who enables this kind of crap by placating veterans. Neifi probably feels perfectly justified.

The Importance of context. Sometimes it can be easy to seem how people claim to be misquoted.

From the tribune article on Nefi wanting to start:

Baker puts a premium on defense, and Cedeno is no slouch himself, but he has to show he can keep the starting job. Baker said Monday that Cedeno has been pressing a bit. He wants Cedeno to "be himself," though Cedeno understands the pressure is on him and left fielder Matt Murton to succeed.

Same thing refernece in Bruce's Daily Herald Column

Manager Dusty Baker said both players look fine to him.

“I see Ronny pressing a little more, I think, than Matt,” Baker said. “Matt didn’t play winter ball, and Ronny did play winter ball. He had a great winter ball. Forget it and go on and be yourself. Both accurately reported what was said, but you get two different meanings. In the Nefi story it sounded like Baker was looking for an excuse to bench Cedeno and in the Herald story it sounds like Baker is reponding to a question by saying he isn't worried about Cedeno.

if only everyone was trying to help, including the veteran backup middle infielder who is allegedly part of the onfield leadership of this team.

That doesn't sound that bad to me, except the part about winter ball which doesn't make any sense. Cedeno's pressing because he had a great winter ball??

I have my own Neifi fears, but I don't think he's trying to sabotage Cedeno.

The other thing is that this is a situation where it would really help if the team had an actual leader in the clubhouse. If I were Cedeno I'd be right pissed at the fact that someone who should probably be rooting for whatever's best for the team is waiting for me to fail. Since Baker won't ever put a player in his place, it falls on someone on the roster to do so, and I don't think we have that guy.

Yeah, I read it a few times and still don't get it. But that's what happens when Dusty talks.

But to be an on-field leader doesn't he need to be playing?

I think he's saying since Cedeno did so well in winter ball, Cedeno thinks he can walk into Arizona and rip the cover off the ball. Maybe he's trying to do too much.

I was referring to the Trib quote, as I hadn't yet seen the Herald.

As usual, I'm going to take Miles's reporting as more accurate than Sullivan's, and give Dusty the benefit of the doubt on this one. We'll see...
