Knee scopes are a ruitine and exploratory surgery. There's no risk for anything but swelling for a week or so. Some guys have only missed as little as a few days from arthroscopic surgery.

EDIT: Of course if they found something major in there that would be a different story, but usually arthroscopic surgery is used to clean up the knee.

While arthroscopic surgery is less invasive, it is still invasive nonetheless. These aren't nano scopes that are used, but equipment that still requires forcing muscle, ligaments and other soft tissues out of place while the "scope" is performed. Hence, there is a healing period that the body needs regardless of arthroscopy's less invasive nature.

I have a hard time believing that he'll "recover fully in two to three weeks". My wife had a similar procedure done in June and it took her months to get over it. She's not a professional athelete with a staff of personal trainer looking after her, but I think 2-3 weeks to be fully recovered is insanely optomistic.

If Furcal had been acquired by the Cubs, I guarantee this would be front page news in Chicago.

If he had been acquired by the Cubs, the trainers would have given him two aspirin and encouraged him to "work the kinks out in the Dominican league." Hendry would support the decision by stating that Furcal could postpone surgery and still be available by opening day.

Of course, Hendry would be half right...opening day 2007.

Ouch. It would be funny if it wasn't so true.

Routine or not, it's still surgery, and I'd still be annoyed if I were a Dodgers fan. For what the Dodgers paid for Furcal, you'd expect a perfect physical specimen.

Maybe so, but the fact that he needs the scope indicates there could be an underlying problem that could resurface later.

I had the same thing done a couple of years ago, and I was good to go in about 3 weeks with minimal PT. He'll be alright, assuming they don't find anything else.

Well they know there is a "slight tear." He had some problems last season with it but they just drained his knee every time. It's something he could basically keep doing for awhile yet but they figure to just get it done so he gets a full Spring. Yeah, any invasive surgery no matter how invasive is reason for concern but I don't think there's going to be any problem. Usually good to go shortly after the swelling goes down. I'm sure Hendry was fully aware of it, as well.

It's January, so recovery time for a knee "scope" doesn't matter. It should have had no bearing on contract negotiations and will not affect his ability to get on the field on time.

I think this comment negates the first part. Does anyone else remember when Clyde Drexler played a playoff game the same week as he had arthroscopic surgery? It was only days later and he was playing a sport where you run around the whole game.
