The Chicago Cubs announced they have tendered contracts to all remaining unsigned players, including outfielder Corey Patterson, who lost his job to new center fielder Juan Pierre.

The Cubs have made an offer to free agent outfielder Jacque Jones, and expected a decision soon. Jones, a left-handed hitter, batted .249 in 142 games with 23 home runs and 73 RBIs.

"We expect to hear from them today or tomorrow on their decision," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said Tuesday.

Both Patterson and Pierre are arbitration eligible, along with Jerry Hairston Jr., Will Ohman, Carlos Zambrano, and Mark Prior.

Players with at least three years of service in the Major Leagues, plus the most senior 17 percent of those with between two and three years service, are eligible for salary arbitration.

Prior's initial contract guaranteed his salary for 2006. However, once he became an arbitration-eligible player -- which he now is with 3 years, 131 days of Major League service -- he has the right to file for arbitration.

Good to hear Corey was offered arbitration. Also, I guess Prior was arb eligible. I don't like the quote from Hendry on J. Jones though. Hopefully Jones turns the Cubs offer down.

That doesn't make sense. Plenty of players sign contracts through their arbitration years, and they don't have the option to file just because they have the service time. If Prior had the option to file, wouldn't we have heard about it before now?

We did hear about it before, it was just unclear exactly when he would have that option, or if it was a one time thing or not. I would have thought he had to make that choice already, but I haven't heard a thing.

Perhaps there have been other factors which make Hendry shy away from signing a super huge guy or taking on a lot of salary.

Perhaps he was hoping he wouldnt have to give Z and Prior raises? or perhaps he wants to work out multiyear deals with them?

Who knows.

But wait a sec, if that was the case, then why offer to Furcal and not Giles?

Hmm Hendry is either starting to make less and less sense or I make no sense at all.

Oh yeah. Can't wait for him to steal $3 million from us this year. Unbelievable.

I really dont see him being as bad as he was last year.

FWIW, I'd rather see him in right than Jones.

What's the difference? We're giving freakin' Neifi $2.5 next year. Hopefully Hendry can find a good trade for Corey and get something instead of nothing.

I can not believe that

Neifi is back

Corey is back

and Jones may be here.

Thats all Baker needs, some Vets, a pet project like Corey and then all of a sudden you have mabry and patterson taking time away from Murton and Neifi getting like 50% of the playing time over Cedeno.

What in the world is going on up there?

I hope they honestly do not think that we can win a championship with this team. The only way would be to have some freak years out of some players in the post roid era.

4-5 years ago I would have though this is more likely but since people have the new testing rules etc. the likelyhood is low.

Yes, we're giving Neifi $2.5 million and everyone freaked out about that. So why not freak out about Corey? A majority of this board seems to be clamoring for Corey to play right field because he's "not that much worse than Jones."

Perhaps. But he is worse. And an upgrade is an upgrade.

But that upgrade has to be worth the cost.

Neifi is Neifi and always has been Neifi. We know Neifi will suck and has no chance to earn his 2 year $5m deal.

As small a chance as it may be, at least Corey, at his age and with his skills and brief flashes of solid play, has a chance to live up to a $3m 1 year contract.

But isn't the rumored deal for Jones roughly 1 year/$3 million? Even if it's a bit more, I'd pay an extra million bucks or so to have Jones instead of Corey.

I doubt it, he made 5M last year.

I thought I saw a rumored 3/22 deal for Jones. Not from the Cubs, but I think you're looking closer to 7 mil per year for at least 2 years to get Jones.

I want no part of Jones, or Corey, in RF next year. So it's hard to have this discussion.

Something to remember is the Cubs do have the money to spend, and this wouldn't keep them from getting somebody else, because they apparantly aren't getting somebody else. Plus, Corey isn't a bad option to throw out there in LF if Murton goes down for a little while (he's at least comparable to Hairston and Mabry).

If my options were 1/$3 on Corey or 1/$4 on Jones (first I'd fire myself for getting in that position), it would be tough. On the one hand, Jones could outperform Corey this year, which makes my team better. But on the other hand, if he's my starting RF, my chances of success aren't great, so marginal improvements don't help much. And, with Corey there is still that glimmer of hope that he salvages his career.

I probably prefer Corey in that situation, but it may or may not be influenced by emotion. I wouldn't be happy either way.

But I'd rather pay Corey $3m to be the 4th OF than to just give him away for crap.
