He's not Left handed and doesn't have much pop to speak of...but he hits for average, gets on base very well and can play a corner outfield spot...how bout we sign him to a one year deal for 2 mill or so...save the money for a mid year deal if that's what we have to do to improve....keeps us away from Jones at 5 mill a year for a couple years and actually gets us a productive ballplayer...also lets us get one step closer to reuniting the 03 marlins. :D

He is extremely old, he does not put up the numbers to justify a corner OF spot, he is incapable of playing anywhere close to everyday. Isn't anymore productive than Jones.

If you want him for your 4th OF, you could do worse. But if you are considering him for RF, you should check into an institution.

There ya go with all your positive spin again Goony...

His numbers from last year really weren't all that bad. The .374 OBP is more than we could ever dream of getting from Jones, and we wouldn't be tying up RF long term with a bad player/bad contact. He could slide into the 2 hole with those numbers...I'm not saying he's a season maker...just that he could be a better option than Jones, especially since it allows(no screams) for a mid-season upgrade at that position.

Suggesting it, considering our current options, is far from grounds for institutionalization...despite what my wife may think.

Those numbers were done in role player capacity. Not everyday player. A 40 year old Conine is not an option for everyday player. You're talking about a guaranteed sub 800 OPS from RF, no freaking way.

Again...maybe I'm not making myself clear...I'm not saying he's the second coming of Ted Williams...I'm saying, all things considered, he may be a better option than Jones. Indeed, his OPS was 20 points higher than Jones' last year. If those are my two, and only two options...I pick Conine, if for no other reasons than he gets on base more and would easily fall back into the 4th outfielder role if/when we were able to pick up a quality player in a trade once the season starts.

Its not like we've got a ton of much better options just staring us in the face right now.

Let me try and make myself clear.

Jeff Conine shouldn't even be an option. He is not an option. You cannot even consider him.

If the only other "option" is Jacque Jones for multiple years, at multiple millions of dollars...I completely disagree

That would be the only option only if Hendry limited himself to that being the only option.

The trouble with that line of thinking is that you still have Encarnacion and Wilson as much better options for RF if you choose to go the FA route.

Not that they're great or anything, but they are all better than Conine, who would be a okay bench player on a normally managed team.

I just came home to find the Jones signing....just great.

I don't disagree with your statement at all...but I will say again...given the option between Jones and what is now a 3 year 15+ million contract...or Conine at 1 year 1+ million....well, I'd have rather had option B.

Conine signed with the Orioles.

The Orioles reached a tentative agreement Tuesday night on a one-year contract with free agent Jeff Conine, returning the veteran to the city where he had played for five seasons.

The deal, which will likely be announced Wednesday, is worth approximately $1.75 million with incentives that could push the former Florida Marlin's contract to $2 million for the 2006 season.

Any chance they inked him to take over SS so they could peddle Miggy to the Cubs?

Yeah, I hear he turns a mean double play.
