We'll see what the next two months bring.

If spring training comes and there's no real option, and Pie is looking good, I would have trouble coming up with a good reason not to bring him up.

Pie in the minors playing everyday is better than Pie in the majors to "fill the gap" in RF by being Macias' backup 4 or 5 days out of 7.

Macias was DFA so thankfully he isn't an option at this point.

They could still sign him to a minor league contract and invite him to ST, you know. Ew, I just made myself sick...

Here's a little test based on sac fly opportunities from 2004 and 2005.

Thanks for taking the time. Good stuff.

It would also appear that there's not a huge difference between how many balls each position fields (at least in the air) though it looks as if right fielders may get slightly more opportunities.

This doesn't address the biggest reason to put your best arm in right; as 1908 pointed out, right fielders need to throw to third quite a bit to keep a runner on first from going to third, whereas a left fielder's main use for his arm is all those throws home.

So your LF and RF are likely to field the same number of balls, and neither one is likely to have to throw home more frequently than the other one? That runs counter to your frequency theory, Mizzou. Taking the throws to third into account, it seems pretty clear to me that you put your best arm in RF.

Another little tidbit, this time measuring how often a throw is required to third base: In 2005 there were 1,908 singles to left field with a runner on first and second base open. (Just to please Dusty and remove any base-clogging effects.) Those runners only tried to advance past second base 261 times. In the same situation with a single to right field, however, the runner tried to advance past second base 934 times. (Out of a total of 2,187 singles.) In this respect a right fielder's arm is needed over three and a half times as often as a left fielder's, and it's a much longer, more difficult throw to boot.
