I dont buy that he is overrated, but I think in this market he could become overpaid

Wake me up when the guy can throw at least 200 innings with an ERA under 4.

Am I the only one not worried about our starting pitching?

We have Zambrano, Prior, Wood, Williams and Maddux. If someone can't go we have Rusch. Even last year his numbers in 19 starts were league average. If someone else goes down, we have Hill and maybe Guzman. In a pinch we'll have a couple guys at AA. If we need to go deeper we are probably out of contention anyway. Is Millwood at 4/40 really that much of a difference?

Fix the offense.

I'm personally not a big fan of Millwood. I really wanted AJ Burnett but he's not available anymore. Chances are, we are going to go in 2006 with the pitchers you mentioned. I am a bit concerned about the health of our pitchers but that makes upgrading the offense an even bigger priority.

I agree on the offense, but

Williams may be gone by season start via trade for the offense

Maddux SHOULD be gone by season start

Wood isnt expected to be ready by season start by management

that leaves us Z and Prior...I am worried....

I'm very worried about our starting pitching for the same reasons -- we have Wood, Williams, and Maddux and if someone can't go, we have Rusch.

guzman hasnt even gone a full season in the minors so i highly doubt he will be called up at all in 2006 even if he is healthy. from what hendry has said, rusch is going to start along with prior, zambrano & maddux. that leaves williams, hill & wood. you would have to think that either hill or williams will be used to get a rf, and the other will go to aaa if wood is healthy.

If Guzman is not going to appear in the majors at all this season, trade him.

He'll be out of options spring 2007. It'll be too much to ask for him to stick for good at that time if that's his first exposure to the majors ever.

I tend to think if he doenst make it to Chicago this year, it wont matter what his options are in 2007, no one will take him. you have to think if he is healthy at all this season, he gets a call up-even just for the bullpen

I like Millwood a lot, but there is no denying the stat that he hasn't pitched over 200 innings in 3 of the last 5 years. And if he's being marketed by Boras at the AJ Burnett price point, Hendry should just let someone else overpay.

With the money left though, I do believe Hendry is still targeting an impact starting pitcher.

I still wouldn't be surprised if that pitcher was Derek Lowe (trade), Jeff Weaver (free agent) or Javier Vazquez (trade). I've heard some say Hendry has mild interest in Jason Schmidt (trade), but he seems past his prime to me.

I have convinced myself that Hendry won't give up the talent required to get Zito or Livan Hernandez, not that Livan is available.

Honestly, for some strange reason I think Wood is going to make a significant number of starts in 2006; Maybe not 30 but 25 more more starts (just a feeling it's not based on anything else). Having said that, I'd feel more secure if we acquired an insurance arm. As it stands, we have Wood as a question mark, Zambrano, Prior, and a few number 4 or five starters. That's disconcerting.

Schmidt woulda been nice 4 years ago, Weaver and Lowe both look attractive, save Lowe's contract, and Vazquez falls into the same boat of the 200 in/under 3.00 ERA as millwood-so why trade away for him? all in all, I would rather Hendry went after Weaver of Millwod so he didnt have to give up young-ins. I felt we gave up too much for Pierre, and it worries me what he might give up for a starting pticher.

maybe Millwood gets a more incentive laden contract?

Posted
I'm not very interested in Vazquez, but his would be a much less substantial commitment - $18/2.

$18/2 + Guzman + Pie + Sing

I exaggerate, but Hendry has been giving up the mint for guys this fall...I worry what AZ would walk away with from us.......I would rather it was just $$$$

But those number 4 and 5 starters are competing to be our number 4 and 5 starters. That seems OK to me.

Me too, but not for 4 or 5 years.

I suggested Scott Elarton for a 2-year, "low" dollar contract, but was dismissed.

Actually, I'm happy with the starting pitching the way it is right now, but I'm afraid we're going to have to trade one of Williams/Hill/Guzman to get an outfielder or two or a middle infielder.

The truth is, with Kerry Wood taking up 11%-12% of the payroll, we're not going anywhere if he doesn't contribute a great deal (unless we get top-level starting pitching from an unexpected source, like Hill or Guzman).

Elarton would be nice, but I thought Cleveland resigned him?

I dont mind giving up a good prospect if we get a bat in return, but to give up MORE prospects to get a starter isnt what I would want to pallette.

there is a sense of pouring sand into a broken levy here for me, ie we have spent soo much on pitching, they get hurt, so we spend more, but handing Hill over to Dusty freaking scares me....

Not yet. Word is he wants two years and the Indians only want to give one.
