He had a change of heart after the Furcal fiasco.

it may have something to do with arbitration and they are waiting so they dont have to give up a draft pick to the cardinals. Thats what the mets are doing with Grudz, waiting til thursday. If cubs sign him now , the cardinals would be dumb not to offer arbitration and pick up a free draft choice for him. i think this is how this all works anyways

Has nothing to do with that. Signing Mabry doesn't cost the Cubs a draft choice.

That was news to me as well, until a google search led me to an StL newspaper article.

 

Mabry gets guaranteed deal from Cubs

 

The first of the Cardinals' handful of free agents left the flock as utilityman John Mabry agreed in principle to a one-year guaranteed deal with the Chicago Cubs.

 

The deal, confirmed by Mabry's agent on Monday afternoon, is contingent on a physical scheduled for later this week.

 

I'm not a big on Mabry one way or another, but if Mabry means goodbye Macias, I'm all for it.
