Mooney & Sharma: Eugenio Suarez And Kyle Finnegan Are On The Chicago Cubs' Radar

Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic are reporting that 3B Eugenio Suarez and RP Kyle Finnegan are on the Chicago Cubs "radar".

With the All-Star break behind us, the hot stove is going to be scorching hot over the next 10 days.

With that, Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic are reporting that third baseman Eugenio Suarez and relief pitcher Kyle Finnegan are on the Chicago Cubs' radar.

Suárez, who is a free agent at seasons end, is having a strong 2025 season, currently boasting a .254 batting average with 33 home runs and 81 RBI through 97 games. He's showing a late-career resurgence, with his .563 slugging percentage among the league's best. He's not great defensively, but his bat more than makes up for it.

Finnegan, also a free agent at seasons end, has accumulated 19 saves in 37 appearances, despite a a 4.25 ERA over 36 innings. He carries a lowly 10.6% strikeout-minus-walk rate and has a 1.28 WHIP. While he isn't a high impact arm, he would provide decent depth at the bottom of the bullpen.

Should the Cubs acquire one or both of these pieces at the deadline? Join the conversation in the comments!

No on Suarez, a rental, who's going to be artificially over priced.  Don't think Alcantara or Triantos, etc. is worth it for 3+ months of Suarez.  I'd kick the tires on Finnegan but, I'd be more interested on Soroka from the Nationals.

If Triantos got the Cubs Suarez I would be all in on that one. But he is probably as high as I would go.

On second thought, if it's Triantos for Suarez, I'm with you.

Outside of Cassie / Ballesteros / Rojas / Horton / Wiggins  I would be willing to deal everyone to the Dbacks in a Kelly / Suarez deal .

I really don’t care if they are rentals . Imagine having to face Busch / Tucker / Seiya / PCA / Suarez to start a game . In the playoffs , teams that hit the most homers usually win .

Not only that Suarez protects in case of an injury or 1 or 2 guys slumping at the same . I understand Suarez could slump as well , but the point is keep adding as much quality as you can You also make sure Milwaukee doesn’t get him .

It doesn’t look like that ace type SP will be available . Go get a mid rotation and best bat available then .

Probably not Alcantara either. But for both those guys I agree with you.

I drive Alcantara to the airport .  With that said , Dbacks are said to want young pitching .  Could see Arizona interested in Wiggins / Brown

Swap Wiggins with Birdsell or Brown. I think the Dbacks would have interest in him

I would be fine with any minor league pitcher except Wiggins if they got both Suarez and Kelly. None of the top 5 bats in the system either. So no to Cassie, Ballasteros, Rojas, Alcantara, or Long as well as Wiggins.

I didn’t mean like putting Brown and Wiggins together . More like the Dbacks would probably want someone with a higher ceiling than Birdsell . That’s why I mentioned both Brown / Wiggins

Don’t see the Cubs trading Wiggins for rentals. Brown is probably the best pitcher they would give up.

    I don’t think they would and I wouldn’t . Brown , different story

Yeah the Cubs are missing a middle ground on young pitching.

    - Horton/Wiggins/Brown each have some pretty significant value.  More than you'd give up for any rental, certainly

    - There's some solid performing lower ceiling SP in the upper minors with Sanders, Noland, and Schlaffer.  These feel like "a guy" in a trade not "the guy"

    - Wicks' first half has been a mess between the injury and a couple outings where he got bombed.  On the flip side the stuff is up a couple ticks here in '25.  Probably a tough time to move him.  Though if you've got a team whose model is catching feelings over his velo increase maybe it could work out despite the results?

    - Birdsell just got back from a major injury, so he might be able to lead a deal a month from now but right now again it feels tough

I respect that . For Kelly and Suarez I move him . And I said this perfectly aware of what is going on with Brown and what his ceiling is .

It isn’t one rental. It is two, with one being the best hitter available. I wouldn’t either for just one of those guys. But for both, I think I would.

The upgrade at 3b is likely not as major of an upgrade as people expect it will be. ZiPS projects it as less than half a win.

I wouldn't do it for both, either. You can buy Kelly + another 3b for less than Ben Brown.

Fair. Just making you aware it was did 2. I think I would trade Brown for those two. I value your opinion and understand why you don’t see Suarez as big an upgrade as many do. But I can’t help but love the idea of his bat in the line up. However, I would also be ok with Kelly in one deal and Castro in another and not lose Brown.

I do!  Read the article shortly after my post, I believe he'd be the perfect by low high reward guy for the Cubs.

One thought I had about Suarez.  The Cubs don't desperately need a bat obviously, though he plays the weakest position and gives us another big bat against LHP.  However, you know who does need a big bat and has a strong farm system to fortify the roster?  The Milwaukee Brewers.  I'm not sure how it would work positionally with Durbin being their 2nd most productive position player by WAR but he played a decent amount of SS in the minors.

The question is, given that it is a technically a need for the Cubs, is it worth going a little harder after Suarez to not only benefit the Cubs but prevent the Brewers from getting him?  Winning the division likely gives the Cubs a bye to the NLDS.  Falling to WC1 gives us a matchup against someone like the Mets or Padres and then the 2 seed (Dodgers/Brewers/Phillies?) in the NLDS if they advance.

I don't know if you want to overpay for Suarez to prevent the Brewers from getting him but its at least a consideration.

I think the Yankees will take care of this for us. Brewers will be more savvy and probably go the 2023 route where they grabbed the likes of Canha and Santana.

According to Nightendale , Yankees and Mariners most agressive for Suarez .
