why are you assuming they won't extend bellinger? he fits in perfectly with what they're trying to do long-term and he's getting under 200 million, which means he's in the cubs price range.

Not me, but there is a 0% change that Bellinger would forego free agency at this point unless the Cubs were willing to overpay excessively.  The Cubs could absolutely resign him in the offseason if they offer the most money, but Boras isn't going to take Bellinger off the market without seeing all the options out there.

oh, i thought he meant they won't keep bellinger at all, but you're right,. he probably meant there's no chance at an in-season extension.

Money is obviously the main determining factor, but it's not the end all be all, and the Cubs as a .500 team giving up and trading their best offensive player is a pretty big negative in terms of their sales pitch to Bellinger in the offseason. 

This isn't a 'these kids make too many damn money' argument....far from it, but it's worth pointing out that Bellinger, due to his early career success, has already made $58m in his career. This isn't a Contreras situation ($22m career going into the last offseason), there's probably some personal preference that's going to impact this decision.

I just don’t see them dishing out a long term deal for Bellinger. I think they’re probably comfortable with what’s coming through the system as far as outfield bats, plus Seiya and Happ are already signed. I could be way off base, but I don’t see us even attempting to resign him. I think he was strictly acquired to flip. 
 

Not saying I agree with this like of thinking mind you. That’s just my guess on that particular player.

Our new ownership is not a fan of megathreads.  In the past pretty much all of our discussions were megathreads.  It takes some getting used to but its fine.  Brock thinks it will elicit more conversation and activity if we make separate threads for things.

With regards to selling, it seems like Jed is looking for a reason not to sell.  The only way I'd be ok with selling is if there were some elite prospects being offered...it sounds stupid to say this but more 40-45 FV prospects isn't a big needle mover for me and eventually there will be a 40 man reckoning.  At some point we'll need to consolidate some of that depth.

Tired of the sell sell sell stigma,  it's time to do something different like adding to a core.  Obviously seems as tho we are so afraid of creating a core to work off of since 2016's. Let's get real Everyone who come to play for Chicago's Cubs loves playing for the cubs understandably, so let's embrace what we have created. Cubs finally steered away from the norm of picking up veterans. To  make that push.  We finally now have a farm league that is no joke for years to come.  I say start adding.  Enough of this sell mentality.  FYI ... P.C.A., Canario, Brennan Davis, Ben Brown, Wesneski, Matt Mervis. Let's Go!

I think Jed has to decide by tonight which direction he's going in order to give him enough time to have the discussions with other teams he's going to need to have before the deadline approaches. He doesn't have to necessarily pull the trigger yet, but general frameworks have to be discussed.

I think he's probably explored trade talks for both buy and sell scenarios.  I agree he'll have to start moving soon.

I can't see them selling at this point, even if we lose the next 2 games.  Cubs have the 3rd best run differential in the NL. Our biggest weakness now is our pitching which is just average and we have largely the same starting staff as last year that went on a big roll in the 2nd half.

I'm excited for a Gary Gaetti, Fred McGriff, Castellanos type addition to the offense hopefully.

Jesse Rogers said the Cubs could trade Stroman to give themselves more luxury tax space to make more moves elsewhere .

I think they will make that decision after sundays game . Jesse Rogers said they will wait until the 11th hour to make the decision .

This is both infuriating (the Cubs should not be, in any way, concerned with going over the luxury tax) but also interesting (in that they'll still lose Stroman at seasons end) in that maybe they can use prospects to get a controllable arm.

Well that was always a pipe dream with this ownership. The idea of moving Stroman while trying to add some longer term pieces is definitely intriguing. I could get behind that. But absolutely laughable they'd have to shed salary to add at the deadline because the Rickett's are so terrified of the tax.
