Matt Shaw Taking Reps in the Outfield

The Chicago Cubs may be working with on a creative solution to get Matt Shaw more playing time.

    Cubs Video

Following the acquisition of superstar third baseman Alex Bregman, rumors have been swirling about the Chicago Cubs and two of their utility infielders regarding their roles with the team. While it seems unlikely that Nico Horner ends up being traded, Matt Shaw seems like a more likely candidate. Or, maybe they'll just turn him into a super utility…

John Antonoff shared a video via his X account of Chicago Cubs infielder Matt Shaw taking reps in the outfield. However, how deep we can look at that remains to be unclear.

On one hand, they could be getting shot reps so that he can play either corner outfield spot when Ian Happ or Seiya Suzuki needs a rest. While both players are strong, offensively, they are both average, two slightly below average, defenders at their respective positions. Shaw's experience in the outfield is extremely limited, while he doesn't have any professional experience, he did appear and left and right field a total of 40 times as an amateur. Depending on how quickly he can pick up outfield defense, he may not be much of a downgrade when half or Suzuki need a day off.

On the other hand, the Cubs could be using this time as an opportunity for teams to see that Shaw in the outfield is within the realm of possibility.

Do you think the Cubs end up hanging onto Shaw? Let us know in the comments!

Nah.  I was looking at Cot's and the rest of you were looking at RosterResource, which I never knew about.  But name calling?  Not surprised by your type.

So how's your lie about that guy waving his gun around working now that the video from the lady in the pink coat has been uploaded online? Going to apologize yet for making horsefeathers up or you going to double down on it?

It's too late for JC.  When a person waives around a gun at law enforcement, he should get shot.  Hopefully Jesus Christ is there for him now.

horsefeathers gross. Gaslight anyone here again, and you're gone. We all have eyes, we saw what happened, and your horsefeathers isn't going to fly here. I horsefeathers LIVE in Minneapolis, and to say your opinion disgusts me on a fundamental human level is the nicest way I can put this.

So about Matt Shaw and taking reps in the outfield.  What about him taking some reps at 1B? He's athletic enough. He's 5' 10", so a bit on the short side. But if he hits, it would give the Cubs another option at 1B against LHP. Looks like right now, they're relying on Austin.

I don't think a guy as short as Shaw could play 1B with any regularity.

He's listed at 5' 10". Busch is 2 inches taller. I wouldn't want to play Shaw at 1B with any consistency, but having some experience there could help. He certainly seems athletic enough.  Again, looks like right now, Austin is the RH backup.

There's probably not a lot of harm in letting him try in the spring, but for me it's a longshot that it'll be needed.  If Austin fails then that role (and roster spot) would seem to have Jonny Long's name on it.  So for Shaw to get run there you basically need Austin to fail, Long to fail, AND Busch's late season progress against lefties to not carry over.

If you drive 350 miles to defend illegals and try to interfere with law enforcement and drive at them in your car, you should be shot.  At least the law says that.

People this stupid are allowed to post here? I think going forward in everyday life any Trump humping fool needs to have their ****** lives even worse . Ridicule them

I've been here 20 years, and I've seen so many people get away with so much. This place has devolved into a liberal echo chamber where one sided political discussion is welcomed and saying extremely offensive things against anyone suggesting a moderate or conservative opinion is celebrated.

That dude was responding to people who came after him and called him names. I haven't always agreed with him, but you banned the wrong person.

I don’t know, guys. Maybe the guy that was defending the public execution of a VA nurse trying to help a woman getting shoved to the ground deserves some grace.

My comment was not just about the latest incident. This has become a place where half the country is made to feel uncomfortable, Matt Shaw is called awful names, and one side of the political spectrum is given free reign to be as offensive as they want. I've avoided the political forum and tried to talk baseball. Most conservatives would view me as pretty liberal. I pastor a church with a medical clinic that caters to people without documentation.

But the extreme liberal vitriol here is just too much, and the mods have stopped caring.
