  1. If we sign Furcal, it will be a 4/36- 5/42 deal. How will that deal look four or five years down the road? Once again, we're mentioned as a suitor. Hendry has been known to get his targets. I have a strong feeling we'll end up with Furcal. Unfortunately, I believe that will be the totality of the splash we make and that our OF still will be uninspiring. If our OF is not improved..I'm done with this team.
  2. For all the talk about Furcal being overrated it sounds like the Braves see the value in Furcal and they are trying to sign him to a long-term deal.
  3. Understood, and I'm not making apologies for the guy. I'm just saying that Cashman is the worst GM out there. Given the proper circumstances, he may be a good GM. I think a lot of that comes from the heightened expectations of the Yankees. They are expected to win the WS EVERY YEAR. That's going to put pressure on a guy, and yes, he will throw money at a solution because he can. He doesn't have the luxury of, say, the Indians who told their fans, "We're going into a rebuilding process and will be ready to compete again in a couple of years." The Yankees as an organization are just so skewed from what the rest of baseball deals with (save Boston), that it's unfair to say he's a bad GM. He's doing the best he can in a very surreal environment. When you trade for Brown and sign both Pavano and Wright for over 8mil per year..well you are a pretty bad GM then.
  4. Come on, he seriously can't be the WORST. He's consistently handcuffed by Steinbrenner. And lest we forget the travesty that was Chuck Lamar? Cashman is not good. Anybody could look good if they were able to cover all their mistakes with another $8 million signing. The guy has more than twice the resources of Hendry. I give Hendry crap for innefficiantly putting together the Cubs roster with $100 million, but I think Jim could have turned this team into an absolute force if he had another $100 million to add on. I don't care if George sometimes forces a guy on him. Some of those guys are people like Sheffield and ARod, two MVP caliber players. I don't pretend that I am qualified to run a baseball team, but if you gave me the Yankees payroll, I'm pretty confident I could build a team that would compete with Cashman's squad. Cashman wanted Vlad, George went with Sheffield behind his back. Sheff's a very good player, but he's no Vlad. Watching that game last night, I was wondering why that team doesn't score more runs. Jeter, ARod, Giambi, Sheffield, Matsui, Posada is just a killer lineup to work through. There's no doubting that ARod didn't do squat. What a choke artist.
  5. Give it up to the worst GM in baseball. Cashman.
  6. Ha. That was pretty annoying on WGN.
  7. The Cubs first round pick will remain no matter what happens during FA - the top 15 picks are exempt from the compensation process. I want the Cubs to take the player they feel is the best at their spot, whether they are HSer or college kid, pitcher or hitter. BPA is the best strategy to drafting. And the Cubs draft BPA, they don't emphasize either HS or college picks. Sweet!
  8. Yet, with Baker boy there's a chance that we will HAHA.
  9. oh well. SAme old story with the Chicago Cubs although I would rather have Baker gone over anybody else, but that isn't going to happen.
  10. I would nto take him as a starter but he has A LOT of value off the bench and could replace Macias.
  11. I apologize, I read the wrong column calculating his WHIP and then got a bunch of critical errors before I had to leave. ERA for relievers isn't a great metric, their smaller number of IP can skew it, and ERA in general has a lot out of the pitcher's control. But, if you want to compare 2005 v. 2005: Farnsworth: 2.19 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 11.19 K/9, 3.22 K/BB, .180 BAA, .542 OPS Against Dempster: 1.85 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 8.17 K/9, 1.96 K/BB, .218 BAA, .580 OPS Against Outside of a small advantage in ERA(which has problems like I mentioned earlier), Farnsworth is clearly more effective, just as he was in '03. I really don't see how he's any better, Farnsworth is clearly better across the board except for a small difference in a stat that he doesn't completely control. Too bad we can't isolate Dempster's dERA for just his relief work. All I know is that Dempster was 33/35. That's good enough for me. His ERA is lower and to me that means more than the other stats. Dempster was lights out. Granted Farnsworth was as well, but if I had a choice I woudl take Demp. EDIT: Also, keep in mind Farns played for the Tigers and Braves who have a pitcher friendly stadium.
  12. Geez, did you even WATCH Farnsworth with the Cubs the last six years? Sometimes he was great. Sometimes he was a gas can. There were way too many times he was the gas can to be worth sticking with him. I can think of a half-dozen times against the Cardinals alone that Farnsworth completely blew it. Couldn't throw strikes for the life of him. Then grooves a fastball that gets clubbed to death 450 feet. Next. And I can think of 6 dozen times when he shut the door. The guy wasn't perfect, but he was a very good reliever. He's better than anything we have and we traded him away for peanuts. Why do people hate him so much, because his 2004 wasn't super good? Dempster is better.
  13. I got the same message several times while trying to log in. I closed the window and opened a new one, which worked. That didnt work for me at first. I had to wait a couple of minutes then it came up again.
  14. Something isnt right with the indicator for new posts. Can you clear out your cookies and start a fresh session and let me know if that works? Looks like it working now. Thanks.
  15. Just got this error message too. I only had one window open. Max connections per IP reatched, (8) please use fewer open windows

  17. Not that is matters what we think of Farns anymore. The simple fact is chances are he will never be a Cub again. Even if he was we all know Dusty wouldn't use him the right way any way. What I would have liked to have seen when he was here is more Save opp, but we all know Hendry has a master plan to get us to the WS.
  18. However you want to compare those two, it doesn't really matter. Farnsworth was far and away better than any reliever the Cubs had this year, Dempster excluded. The closer/non-closer talk is worthless. Set-up men are valuable, dominant set-up men making less than $2m are a great asset. Making trades and signings based on BS like clubhouse chemistry is absolutely moronic and self defeating. Check my previous post. I'm def not against having Fanrsworth as a setup man for us, but to to say he is better than Dempster this year is just not true. The simple fact is though the organization was frustrated with Farns so they traded him. I didnt like it but whatever..the Cubs still suck with or without Farns.
  19. How many saves did Farns have as a Cubs?? How many years was he in Chicago?? Dude would have never got over the hump in Chicago. He wouldn't have came close to doing what Dempster did this year in a Cub uniform. He was better than Dempster was this year in '03. The whole "Farnsworth never lived up to his potential" thing is nonsense. He was and is a great reliever, but when he had a less than spectacular '04 and got hurt, people make up nonsense about him being an alcoholic or a headcase or stupid or whatever. He was NOT better than Dempster this year so what are you talking about? Do not count the games that Demspter started. Farnsworth '03 0.88 WHIP 10.85 K/9 2.56 K/BB .196 BAA .580 OPS against Dempster '05 as a reliever 1.25 WHIP 8.17 K/9 1.96 K/BB .218 BAA .580 OPS against Yes, Farnsworth was better. Why are we comparing 2003 numbers with 2005? I was talking about 05 vs 05, but even so Farns whip in 03 was 1.17 according to yahoo with a era of 3.30. So I personally would rather take the lower ERA above the other stats.

  21. Dempster did an excellent job as our closer and I believe Farnsworth would not be as good in that role for us. We got peanuts for Farns, and maybe all he needed was a change of scenery because there is no denying he had a really good year as a setup man and closer but giving up a grand slam doesnt exactly help your case either. Bottom line, I would have liked to have him here as a setup role but Dempster is the man at closer.
  22. Johnny should change his last name to Delusional.
  23. Those are the things that separate the men from the boys.
  24. Something tells me Marte will not be on the Sox next season. Talk about not handling pressure.
