  1. So do you think we're going to end up signing like 4 more pitchers? Maybe like 3 more catchers and Rubby Perez? The more Perez, the better, I say.
  2. If he comes to the Cubs 1. Will they make a hat small enough to fit his head? 2. Will they make him wear it on his head bill forward? Inquiring minds want to know! But does he want a hat that fits his head? I think the majority of his power is derived from the baby-esque features. Pitchers don't want to be mean to a child, so they don't throw at his face when he tries to bunt for hits? He really needs a mustache. I would probably be on the bandwagon for trading for him if he had a huge stache. I can relate to mustaches more than I can to being a baby. I haven't worn diapers in years, but I wear my mustache everyday. SABR that! MCBA will rule the next decade in baseball! (Mustache-Centric Baseball Analysis). All good points. The high socks, girlish stature, smallish head, hat asque. That has Little League World Series conotations. I wouldn't want to bean a baby either. At totteler though that is a horse of a different color. How sweet would it be if he had a Rolly Fingers handle bar Mustache? This seals it. I want Juan Pierre, if only because he's a good luck charm. Kind of like a troll doll.
  3. I'd rather win. Period. I don't care if (insert most hated person here) is coaching the team, I want to win. If you don't think that's possible with this management team (and I think that's what you're saying), that's one thing. But to wish for losing is something I just don't understand. They don't have to win my way, I just want wins. I think what he means is he doesn't want to see 85 wins out of team that has no chance to win the WS thereby saving Dusty's job. If the team wins the WS, I'm with you - but back to back winning seasons is not good enough. Of course, in that case I'm with you. 85 wins shouldn't be a goal, it's a disappointment. However, sometimes we'd rather be right than good, and I'm just trying to clarify. I admit that this team drives me nuts with its style of play, but if it was winning, I'd learn to love it.

  5. I don't buy any of the reports about Soriano. They were (both?) proffered up by sites that seem to get off on pulling random stuff out of nowhere. Almost all of the players that we've been linked to in rumors post somewhat strong OBPs (Bradley, Furcal, Wilkerson) and to go after Soriano seems to be a great departure from that. I seem to remember that Hendry has made somewhat tacit admissions that this team needs to get on base more. Trading (what would a large price at that) for Soriano just doesn't compute. But then again, neither does anything to do with Neifi. NEIFI RAGE HAS EATEN THE WINTER Oh, I'm not buying the Wood/Zito/Soriano rumor. It's just that Hendry has been said to be high on him in the past and it's no secret that he's available this winter.
  6. If this report is true, then I guess we should start getting used to the idea of Soriano and Pierre, huh?
  7. Et tu, Aramis Fan? Seriously, I hope this is true, just so we can move on. I don't think I can handle another Furcal thread.
  8. Word around here is that he will play, which I think is huge. As long as the IU big men can avoid foul trouble, I think they have a real chance here. Davis has always been a good defensive coach. With the way they are scoring, they can be a real good team. The only thing that worries me is them relying on hitting 50%+ from 3. Hopefully Killingsworth will be a man again tonight.
  9. That is a lot of looneys and twoneys the Jays are spending! IMO Toronto is one of the most beautiful cities in America. This is getting crazy. First they offer 5/55, then they move to America! Stop the insanity. :P
  10. Tiger Bait! Tiger Bait! GEAUX to Hell LSU Wow, so much for friendly rivalries.
  11. I wonder what it was wondering about (while wandering :D ).
  12. 1. Felix Pie +10 +10 2. Rich Hill +10 +6 3. Mark Pawelek +10 +8 4. Ronnie Cedeno +10 +8 5. Renyel Pinto 6. Sean Gallagher 7. Ryan Harvey +10 +8 8. Sean Marshall +10 +7 9. Ricky Nolasco +10 +7 10. Angel Guzman +10 +3 137
  13. So you're implying I'm stupid? Well I'm not implying you want it, but you'll never earn my respect saying stuff like that. People will disagree with you pretty much every day in the workplace, etc., you better get used to it. I'm not implying anything. It is a general statement. You made it pretty clear that you are not interested in looking at the statistical side of baseball. I find that attitude to be ignorant in many respects. It's like the caveman throwing a fit b/c the round wheel wasn't what he used before. Stick with that square wheel. I'm not attacking you. I'm disagreeing with your approach. You can get all bent out of shape about it, but that doesn't help advance your idea. Where have you attempted to argue, with actual evidence, against the use of stats? No where that i've seen. You just throw out unsubstantiated opinions and get mad when people don't agree. I still think you owe me an apology, but whatever. I do care about stats, I've said in a few other threads I find great importance in OBP. Another stat I think isn't used enough is WHIP for pitching. I guess my point isn't that VORP or whatever isn't useful, I highly doubt any GM in professional baseball uses it to weigh making a deal. It's a fun hobby, and predicting transactions is what this forum is for, but I don't think it ever carries over to the real world. I really cant even see Theo sitting at his desk musing "Hmm, let's go with Player A due to his filthy VORP rating." JP Riccardi and Beane use VORP (they probably use their own in house stats with greater reliability). Actually Theo was a stats guy, although he didn't just dismiss scouts' opinions like Beane does, who is completely a numbers guy. Stats do carry over into the real world. how is it that stats can be used in just about every aspect of life with great effect (realizing that they do have limitations) but can't find traction in baseball? the good ol' boys don't like it. i have yet to see a convincing argument as to why stats shouldn't be used that doesn't boil down to "this is the way we've always done it and it works fine." at the very least they should be used to complement the old school approach to baseball. Absolutely the truth, but to color everyone who doesn't live and breathe VORP an ignorant caveman is counterproductive to your argument. Often, the stats guys appear to be fighting a holy war, or trying to prove themselves right moreso than trying to improve baseball teams. Just my 2 cents.
  14. Weird. They did that to me last year.
  15. (Really) rough estimate: Bench: Blanco $1.50 Hairston $2.00 Perez $2.50 ??? ??? Infield: Cedeno $0.30 Ramirez $10.50 Lee $8.70 Barrett $4.00 Walker $2.50 Outfield: Murton $0.30 Patterson $3.00 ??? Pen: Dempster $5.00 Willamson $2.00 Wuertz $0.33 Ohman $0.33 Novoa $0.33 Eyre $3.60 Howry $4.00 Starters Prior $3.50 Zambrano $5.00 Wood $12.50 Maddux $9.00 Rusch $2.50 Williams $1.00 Total $85.39 Premium Regular
  16. The Marlins just traded for their SS (Ramirez). Cedeno and Walker would be redundant. I think they'd be more interested in arms anyway.
  17. Yeah, I know that sounded weird. My point is that I agree with you to an extent. But you can go from early to late really quickly in the hot stove. Oh, I agree. I'm just glad to see something resembling a plan being worked. The big bats are still there outside of Delgado, but he wouldn't fill a need anyway.
  18. So you're saying I'm wrong. "Man, it gets late early around here."
  19. Now that it appears to be done, I'm coming around on these signings. Say what you will about the $$$, Hendry is addressing needs and it is still really early. I wonder if there were specific time-frame goals set, such as Thanksgiving, winter meetings, etc. I'd imagine there is a feeling of momentum going into the winter meetings being able to focus on leadoff and OF at this point. I think the tone was set by getting Dempster done early and that has carried over to the rest of the bullpen. As long as the $ given out so far doesn't restrict the acquisition of a big bat I think we all may be pretty pleased with this offseason in the end. No JJ, JB, or JE comments please. I'm trying to be positive.
  20. Could we please just stop mentioning The One Who Played RF? My recovery is tenuous at best right now- step 1 or 2 of 12- and I'm not sure I'm going to make it if we keep his name around here. In fact, I move that this thread be deleted and we'll move on like nothing ever happened. :-$ I appreciate your support.
  21. My first thought as well. I'll throw in the Sox. "Yes, Len, the former Sox is really struggling at the plate today," or "He was a Bull, now a Magic?" I really hate that.
