  1. There is simply no justification for Matt Murton not being penciled in right now as a starting outfielder for the 2006 Cubs.
  2. Am I reading this board right? Are posters seriously upset that Dusty didn't use Ryan Theriot?
  3. Valentin with a chance to kill us. . . again.
  4. I don't disagree with that. I like speed as much as anyone. But signing him for big bucks ($8MM+) for a .340 OBP? That's not solving our problems. The bottom line is that he just doesn't get on base like an $8MM leadoff hitter should. Just for the sake of perspective, Lou Brock's career OBP was 0.346. And, for further perspective, Lou Brock is one of the most overrated players in the history of major league baseball.
  5. Typical Dusty. He finally starts Cedeno against one of the nastiest right handers in all of baseball. (Dude, I don't want to mess up Neifi's swing, dude)
  6. Yes. ESPN.com http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/aggregate?statType=batting&group=8&seasonType=2&type=type3&sort=GIDPs&split=0&season=2005 Cubs are only 8th in the NL, believe it or not. The Cubs don't get nearly enough men on base to lead the league in double plays. I would bet that the Cubs rank near the top of the league in GIDP per man on first base, which we could fairly accurately calculate by: GIDP/(Singles + BB + HBP) Obviously, this wouldn't give us an exact number, but it would be a good rough estimate.
  7. He actually has 14 unless the TBS announcers are wrong. 13 coming into today. I forgot about #14 from earlier tonight.
  8. How does ARam have only 13 GIDP? It seems that he grounds into a double play just about every day.
  9. The silver lining on this that people may stop crying for Kerry to be the closer -- a potential waste of 140 quality innings (the difference between 210 and 70 innings)
  10. Excellent point. Wendell would routinely send a guy with a no outs and the middle of the order on deck. But sending Barrett was both a visual and situational error. The ball was hit too hard, and no matter who is on deck, it doesn't pay to send one of the slowest players on the team. If it were Lawton or Patterson or Neifi (or even Lee), it's a different story, but not Barrett. It's not gross incompetence on the level of Wendell Kim, but it was a poor gamble. Again, I disagree about it being a situational error. With Patterson on deck and two outs, the odds of scoring the run was not very good. So, I am fine with the decision to send even a slow runner. On the other hand, it might have been an egregious visual error. I didn't see the play, so I cannot really comment on that.

  12. I don't get it. Hollandsworth has absolutely no purpose on this team other than to be the primary left-handed bat off the bench. So, Dusty uses Macias to hit for Z in a tie game in the bottom of the eighth inning.
  13. Without having even seen the play (I'm listening to Pat and Ron), I'm not mad at Spier because (1) there were two outs, and (2) Patterson was on deck. So, taking a chance was appropriate and good baseball strategy. Wendell Kim consistently made the first out at home plate (and often when the Cubs trailed by several runs). There is simply never an excuse for that. Quite simply, there is a HUGE distinction between an error in visual judgment (getting a guy thrown out by 20 feet in a situation that calls for aggressiveness) and an error in baseball knowledge (making the first out of an inning at home plate while down 3 runs). The first is good aggressive baseball and should be treated as such, regardless of outcome. The second is pure stupidity. My problem with Kim and Cubs' management was the refusal to acknowledge the difference between the two errors -- and the insistence that the second error (pure stupidity) was simply good aggressive baseball. It's not.
  14. On Friday, Patterson (1) was thrown out at the plate because he refused to either hook slide or run the catcher over (after missing a sign); (2) was doubled off first base; (3) popped out with runners on 2nd and 3rd with no one out; (4) struck out on three breaking ball outside the strike zone in the 8th. That's "doing just fine?" You must have different standards than I do.
  15. You must not have been watching the same game that I was watching. In the game that I was watching, Corey was thrown out at the plate despite the fact that Prior hit a ground ball to the right side. How could he have been "just about hit by the swing" and yet still get thrown out on a ground ball to the right side?
  16. That's true. The .306 OBP with an average of .293 tells me the guy never takes a walk, which limits his effectiveness. I'm beating my head against the wall cause Macias didn't take a walk. 4-3 is better than 5-3. The guys a bench player who can play a bunch of positions. You want to bring back DuBois, who has a lower obp and can't play any positions? Yeah, Dubois will be a career sub-.300 OBP guy. He's a better offensive player than Macias by a fair margin even with his struggles, if that's what you're asking. How's he doing w/ Cleveland? 2005 OPS Macias -- .659 Cubois -- .766 Next question, please. Does the NL have a DH? Dubois plays 1 position poorly. Macias plays 7 positions poorly.

  18. Pretty safe bet that the answer to that question is no.
  19. But for his third baseman, he should be winning this game.
  20. When can I stop hearing the "Aramis is really improving defensively" crap. He's a freaking butcher at third base.
  21. Riggleman babied Wood's arm like a 4 year old's. I'm sure there are things to criticize Riggs for, but his use of Wood is certainly not one of them.
  22. Dave Kingman had a career OBP of .305. So, no, Billy Beane NEVER would have "loved a lineup full of Kingman's." Now, if you want to say he would have loved a lineup full of Bellhorns, Thomes, Chois, etc., I'll agree with you.
  23. Dear Mr. MacPhail, Please do Cub fans the favor of ridding us of both of these incompetent idiots. Thank you, Cub Nation.
  24. We don't want people clogging up the bases, dude.
  25. How did I know that somehow Nomar's return to the lineup would come at the expense of Todd Walker? And, we need to get someone IMMEDIATELY that Dusty thinks is worthy of starting in CF. Other than, "Who should be released?," there are no questions to which "Jose Macias" is the answer.
