  2. Think about it. Over the 2004 and 2005 seasons, the Cubs had invested close to $18M in Remlinger, Hawkins and Borowski. That amount would have paid for Jeff Kent. I know - it's not an apples to apples comparison. Whether it is or is not, it's just further proof that paying obscene amounts for bullpen arms is a waste of money. The correlation between salary and success is lower in the bullpen than anywhere else on the field. As the Angels have proven the last 5 years, great bullpens can be made for very, very cheap. Yet, the Cubs continue to pay millions to guys based on 60 good innings the previous season. Yet, the difference between a 3.00 ERA and a 4.00 ERA over that many innings is 7 runs, within the whim of pure luck, and certainly not enough to conclude that the guy with the 3.00 ERA is the better pitcher. Yet, teams are falling all overthemselves to acquire the guy with the lower ERA. (See, e.g. Kolb, Danny.) Position players are much safer bets because the sample size is so much larger. Yet, our "genius" GM keeps throwing money at the bullpen. It's simply a waste of money.
  3. There are 1,000 things that make Dusty a poor manager. His belief that people should be praised in public and criticized in private is not one of them. That's just effective leadership. Quite frankly (channeling Stuart A.), i believe that he does criticize the players in private.
  4. Here's my post-Nomar, post-Patterson lineup. (I think this will be upon us within the 10 days reported by Levine) 1 Lawton LF 2 Nomar SS 3 Lee 1B 4 Burnitz RF 5 Ramirez 3B 6 Walker 2B 7 Barrett C 8 Patterson CF
  5. I think everyone reasonably assumes that when Wood, Nomar, and Williamson are activated Cedeno, Mitre and either Wuertz/Novoa will be sent down. The more interesting question is this one: Who goes when Patterson returns? Murton has proven to be a asset (even if used only in limited duty) at the major league level. So, I don't think he's likely to be sent down. When Patterson returns, might we FINALLY see the release of Jose Macias? His only purported vale is as switch hitter of the bench that can play all 8 positions. But, with Perez and Hairston both relegated to utility roles, they'll cover every position on the field (except catcher): Perez can play all 3 infield positions; Hairston can play 2B and CF. What role would Macias fill? (Not that he fills a role now)
  6. We're getting nothing for Lawton at the end of the year. Now, we have a former rookie of the year (OK, it was sporting news, not the real award) He's left handed, and we have a short porch. He'll platoon w/ Restovich. So, we've opened a spot to give two guys who have a future with us a chance to do something. The trade wasn't about short term money, but about getting younger. This trade absolutely made sense for both teams. It's the rare both-teams-did-well trade. The Cubs got a better player, who fills a need as they pursue the wild card. The Pirates got a younger player, who they can keep under contract at a reasonable price for several years.
  7. You're close to breaking the first rule of baseball message boards, which is that no player on the home team is "below average" defensively. According to the aggregate sum of MLB team message boards, 3/4ths of the players in the league are "gold glove caliber" or "above-average" defensively. The other 1/4 are "average, but clearly not below average." See, e.g. (1) this board's collective insistence that CPatt is "gold glove caliber," and (2) this board's opinion that Walker, at worst, is a "league average" second baseman.
  8. I think that's the first time I've ever seen the words "competent" and "Bowden" in the same sentence.
  9. Even a guy with an ERA over 10 looks good against this lineup.
  10. Perez/Holla/Macias. Is that the most pathetic stretch of three hitters in the history of major league baseball? I say yes.
  11. Let's just keep putting runners on base, Dusty. I love that Connor Jackson got called up JUST IN TIME to play the Cubs.
  12. Aram now 3 for his last 17. (And, it's not like his hit yesterday was hit all that hard -- just a chopper with eyes)
  13. Actually, ARam is in a bit of a mini-slump. He's 3 for his last 16 with no walks.
  14. Pujols, Rolen, and Dunn in the middle of that order for the next 7 years? Yuck.
  15. I getting depressed already about the inevitability of Henrdy signing the very tools-y Jacque Jones.
  16. Well cancel out Shoppach and add Bigbie. Do they even have a place for him to play? I'd guess this definitely means Huff is gone for sure now. Bigbie's gonna be getting some sweet frequent flier miles this weekend. Whose reporting this by the way? Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus. He says its Bigbie for Adam Stern and Shoppach. He was going off a newspaper report that said it wasn't final though. His article (which is premium content on BP) includes no such disclaimer and describes the deal in the past tense.

  18. I want it to happen, you want it to happen, but we all know that it won't happen. The organization seems to like the guy as a 25th man.
  19. Well, the Red Sox just traded Shoppach to Colorado for Larry Bigbie.
  20. Since the current White Sox SS is better than Perez, why would they make such a trade? (that said, if ANYONE is willing to take Neifi off our hands, please let them.)
