  1. LOL. He's .263/.268/.288. That's Neifi-esque. Actually, it's worse. Last year, Neifi was .274/.298/.383 and for his career, he's .269/.299/.378. It's one thing to argue that May is only twenty games, the sample size isn't very big, and that Cedeno has a strong enough minor league track record to be allowed to play through. It's another thing entirely to post an entirely misleading stat, implying that Ronnie's performance in May has somehow been acceptable. It hasn't. He's been utterly dreadful.
  2. I now, officially, am rooting for this team to lose every single game for the rest of the year. Hypothetically, if they lost 140 games, they would HAVE to fire the General Manager, right? Right? Please?
  3. Dude, the Yankees have gamers like Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada, who clearly know how to hit in the clutch. That's pretty obvious, dude.
  4. With the collection nancy speed demons that Hendry has collected, do you really think they'd do well in a brawl against Jenks/Konerko/Thome/Crede/etc.?
  5. Who is an underachiever on the Cubs? Ramirez, I guess? This team just flat sucks. They've not underachieving. They're just bad. "Underachieving" connotes that they should be playing better. They shouldn't.
  6. Yup. For three years, we've heard everyone involved -- including the radio announcers -- act like the entire problem is the inability to hit with runners in scoring position. They just don't get it.
  7. Are we actually excited about Pie and Eric Patterson, two more Cub farm products that have shown absolutely no command of the strike zone and whose value is tied almost entirely to batting average? This organization -- and its worship of toolsy guys with no plate discipline -- disgusts me.
  8. In theory, you may have a point. But in application, Dusty won't use the 12th guy except for blowouts. There were times last year that the 12th pitcher -- frequently Bartosh or Hill -- didn't pitch for 10, 11, 12 days. If that's how Dusty is going to use that guy, I'd rather have the extra hitter.
  9. True fans NEVER root for their players to actually fail. Instead, what you should root for is for Dusty to use him properly and for him to succeed in that role. Thanks for telling me what I should and should not do. I guess I'm not a "true fan."
  10. I'm rooting for him to fail. Last year, he got off to such a great start, that no matter how poorly he played after May -- and he was AWFUL -- Baker could not see past his empty overall batting average. He just did not understand how much Perez was killing the team offensively over the last four months. I hope Neifi starts 4 for his first 81. Dusty seems to only look at overall numbers anyway, so it's the only way to keep Neifi from getting 400 plate appearances again.
  11. I'll be right on the money when Dusty doesn't double switch Neifi out of the game. He may double switch Neifi over to SS, and have Hairston take over at 2nd, but Neifi will not come out of the game. Book it! Although I hate Neifi starting games as much as you do, the fact that Neifi will always play 9 innings (when he starts) is not particularly surprising. Nor is it damning of Baker. If you believe -- as I do -- that Neifi's proper role on this team is to serve only as a defensive replacement for Walker in the late innings of games that the Cubs lead, why would you take him out of the game at that point when he does start? Clearly, he should never start. But in the games that he does start, why do you expect (or want) Baker to compound the problem by removing Perez from the game just at the point where he might contribute?
  12. I'd say something on the order of 4 years, 50-55 million would be a pretty good deal for both sides.
  13. I'd rather have Craig Wilson than Jock Jones.
  14. Jim Riggleman doesn't get nearly enough respect. The '98 team that won the wild card couldn't sniff any of the last three Cub teams in terms of talent.
  15. Rozner is the same columnist who ran a story while Maddux was a free agent two years reporting that Maddux had a 4 year, $40 million offer on the table from another team.
  16. I was never a big fan of Harry, but he had a few great ones: -"They're dancing in the streets of Memphis,TN" every time "Randall Kirk Meyers" got a save. -"Archi Cianfracco spelled backward is . . . um . . . um . . . . oh, hell, I don't know." -And who could forget the infamous controversy during Nomo's rookie season, when Harry quipped: 'I don't think we'll ever see a Japanese succeed as a position player in the major leagues; I just don't know how they can see the ball with their slanty eyes."
  17. Clearly, where a ground out can move a runner over, it is better than a strikeout. Just as clearly, a 10 pitch strikeout is better than a 1 pitch ground out with no one on base. You can't possibly contend that when no one is on base, a ground out is more valuable than a strikeout. So your "argument," is just as context dependent as mine.
  18. Yeah, I was just thinking this morning about how much the Cubs really need another second baseman.
  19. Wrong. The average strikout requires far more pitches than the average ground out. With no one on base, it is far better to have a 10 pitch strikeout than a 1 pitch groundout.
  20. because strikeouts have nothing to do with OBP. Not to quibble over details, but strikeouts do have something to do with OBP. Every time a player strikes out, he doesn't reach base. So, your statement is inaccurate. It is accurate to say that a player's percentage of strikeouts to total outs has nothing to do with OBP. In other words, if a player makes 400 outs, it is irrelevant to his OBP whether he strikes out 1 time or 400 times.
  21. Who wants to give me odds on the following: Corey Patterson's 2006 OPS will exceed both Jacque Jones's 2006 OPS and Juan Pierre's 2006 OPS.
  22. At this point, I'm worried about what effect retaining him could have on the clubhouse. I have to think that the other players will be angry watching an obviously inferior player start at 2B instead of Walker. (I've given up any hope that the Cubs will, you know, actually play their best 2B at 2B)
  23. Plan? At this point, I'd settle for a "Clue."
  24. HAHA! Good one. I don't know. Don't they have Olmedo Saenz too? By my count, they have: C: Navarro/Phillips/Alomar INF: Furcal, Kent, Saenz, Izturis, Choi, Mueller, Nomar OF: Drew, Jose Cruz, Jayson Werth, Ricky Ledee, Jason Repko, Lofton And they're rumored to be close to signing Reggie Sanders. That's 17 guys.
  25. I know Colletti is new at this "GM" stuff, but he does know that there is a 25 man roster limit, right?
