I don't understand.Just a guess, but I'm betting that he was hoping that the elbow pain would be temporary, so he lied about it to explain Ryan's absence hoping that he'd get better and nobody would ever know. I suppose letting it known that your big closer acquisition from a year ago has elbow problems makes you look bad and might detract from the typical feel-good aura of a new season. I can see why organizations might be conservative when it comes to communicating injuries to the public ("he's got minor elbow discomfort"), but outright lying about it? I don't see how that benefits you.
