  1. Maybe, but there is nothing in his minor league record to suggest he is really capable of being truly a patient hitter. If I were to hazard a guess, his best case projection is Raul Mondesi. Not a bad player, but no future superstar.
  2. **BUMP** If you don't want to vote for Ron Santo, then at least vote for Pat Hughes, Vince Lloyd and Steve Stone.
  3. I didn't see this as a negative article at all. In fact, it struck me as very well balanced. When you are talking about making a multi-million, multi-year investment, a player's past is a real concern. It appears that Furcal at least is making a concerted effort to right himself. Yet Furcal's past issues cannot be ignored. It is up to Hendry and company to make the final determination as to whether he is truly worth the gamble. I say this, by the way, as someone who, much to my great shame, has had a DUI arrest in his past.
  4. Mathematical impossibilites aside, I agree that Derrek Lee has little chance of winning the MVP. He lost it when Dusty had Patterson and Perez batting 1-2 for a month long stretch. Through no fault of his own, D-Lee's RBI totals were abysmal in the second half of the season. Like it or not, MVP voters pay attention to that sort of stuff. That, combined with the Cubs mediocore finish, pretty much put the kibosh on Lee's MVP chances I predict Lee finishes third behind Pujols and Jones in the voting. I can accept Pujols finishing ahead of Lee, but putting Jones ahead of Lee is a cruel joke. In no way does Jones' season deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Lee or Pujols. He hit a lot of home runs and that was it, plus his defense was overrated too. That's not to say he wasn't a fine player, but he doesn't belong in the MVP discussion.
  5. Well I call shenanigans. Since when has Ken Rosenthal ever been right? His track record is hardly better than Gammons. If Rosenthal says it, it is most likely not going to be true (he says hopingly).
  6. Maybe so, but the splits speak for themselves: (2005) Home: .315/.355/.656 Road: .224/.265/.374
  7. And honestly, I wouldn't trade Mike freakin' Wuertz for Alfonso Soriano. Soriano sucks (for reasons that have already been documented on this website which I will not take the time to rehash). Wood's trade value is probably at the lowest it has ever been. I, for one, still think he has some mileage in left in his arm and am still optimistic that he can be effective. If you are going to trade him, at least wait until he gets back on track and his trade value rises commensurably (at which point any suggestion of a trade will probably met with howls of protest). Even I (Mr. OBP) don't think Soriano sucks. I'd gladly take him at 2nd base if I had very good to excellent OBP in the other 7 spots in the order. Not many 2b's give you 81 XBH's in a season. Heck, I'd take that kind of production out of Patterson. But, once again if the other spots in the order had very good to excellent OBP's. My objection to Soriano isn't so much his low OBP, which as you have stated is nicely offset by his power and speed (albeit statistically aided by his home park), but his defense at second base. By all accounts, Michael Young and Alfonso Soriano are probably the worst at their respective positions in the entire league. If he played second base adequately he'd be palatable, unfortunately that is not the case.

  9. Considering some of the dodgy excuses we've gotten from some of the steroid offenders (**cough** Rafeal Palmeiro **cough**), I was quite impressed with Lawton's willingness to fess up and claim responsibility: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2211753 By the way, note that Lawton did not appeal his suspension. According to Will Carroll / USA Today Sports Weekly, the A.L. playoff offender was in fact appealing his suspension. If Will Carroll and USA Today Sports Weekly are correct, there is another suspect that is still at large.
  10. Oh come on. Who was a better fielding pitcher? I don't know, but Maddux didn't strike me as wondrous out there. Maybe my expectations for Maddux are extraordinarily high, but he didn't seem to be much better than any of our other pitchers. On occasion he'd make an exceptional play, other times he'd commit a flub. In fielding prowess, he didn't seem to be any better than Carlos Zambrano (if anything, I'd rate Carlos higher). Whether Maddux did or did not deserve the gold glove, there is little doubt he is gobbling them up on name recoginition. I don't think the people that vote for this stuff know any better than I do as to who was the league's best fielding pitcher.
  11. Speaking of getting a gold glove by virtue of name... http://www.homeruncards.com/imagesrc/madduxdon.jpg
  12. I am just glad Neifi didn't win one, even if he was probably more deserving than Omar Vizquel. Myself, I would have given it to Jack Wilson.
  13. I never liked the move in the first place. yeah i miss jody gerut too :( I've mentioned this before, but Jody Gerut would have been a nice player to have on the roster for '06. I don't want him starting, but he would have been crackerjack as a 4th outfielder. And as long as we are on the topic of 4th OFers, what's sad is that whenever we entertain the possibilty of acquiring some potentially useful veteran to fill out the roster, the first concern is whether Dusty will play him every day.
  14. Vote the trifecta: Pat Hughes/Vince Lloyd/Ron Santo.
  15. It would have been nice if we could of gotten some steroid-fueled production from him, but nada, not a sausage.
  16. Also, Gammons has Bobby Valentine as the new manager. I'm still hoping against hope that the Dodger brass sees the light and gives Johnnie B. Baker a ring.
  17. That appears to be what is happening, viz. Orel as next GM. Really? Cool. Source? Gammons. Of course, I don't need to tell you that grain of salt warnings need apply.
  18. That appears to be what is happening, viz. Orel as next GM. At least I am hearing rumors to that effect.
  19. Please hire Dusty. Please, please, double please.
  20. Very little credibility. I don't think there has ever been a major rumor that he has reportered (whether it involved the Cubs or Pete Rose being reinstated) that has turned out to be true. Will Carroll also isn't a beat reporter. He doesn't try to break rumors or news. He's always been more of an analyst than a reporter. I don't think it's fair to say he has very little credibility because he's never broken a major rumor that came true. Well, let me put it this way then, when it comes to rumors of this sort, Will "Pete Rose will be reinstated" Carroll has little credibility.
  21. Very little credibility. I don't think there has ever been a major rumor that he has reportered (whether it involved the Cubs or Pete Rose being reinstated) that has turned out to be true. On the other hand, this was reported in USA Today's Sports Weekly, and Carrol wasn't propagating a rumor as opposed to commenting on one that has already been published. Having written a book on the subject, I can see why he would be involved in the process of an appeal. Funny, on another thread I was joking that Podsednik got off the juice before the season started and then resumed his habit during the play-offs. All of a sudden, that doesn't quite sound so outrageous.
  22. I think a lot of that came during the first couple of weeks when he got a lot of fluke hits and had an insanely high batting average. I was more impressed with him as he was playing every day, hitting the ball with authority while showing patience at the plate. His .261/.329/.478 line against righties is acceptable to me. That goes without saying. By committing themselves to a league-minimum salaried Murton, it allows them to allocate more money towards a centerfielder and corner outfielder instead of having to spread it around for all three OF positions (as others have noted). Assuming, hopefully of course, that Patteron and Burnitz are not in the discussion.
  23. Even if he is just so-so, he is young and cheap and allows us to apply our resources in other areas of need. I think he is better than so-so and has a chance to be pretty good. He should be a no-brainer starter for next year. Unfortunately, my biggest fear is that they will come up with some half-cocked platoon arrangement with an aged veteran. The last thing we need is another Dubois/Hollandsworth, Karros/Choi situation.
  24. Jim Hendry can take the sting out of this by announcing tomorrow that he won't be picking up Burnitz's option and that he intends to let Jose Macias and Neifi Perez walk. I know that asking for Dusty Baker's firing might be a little too much to ask for.
  25. Fire up the crack pipes Sox fans, your Chicago White Sox are your 2005 World Series champs. Conrgratulations Sox fans. Seriously. I'm so freakin' jealous right now. Get on the ball Tribune, Hendry.
