  1. Even if they get Wilkerson for him? What do the Red Sox or Twins have to offer the Cubs to make it worth losing Walker for 2006?
  2. Play Jerry at second for an entire season, or look at his numbers with the O's. As I said back in April, Jerry Hairston is a mediocre player. He could be the Jose Macias in terms of versatility for 2006, but he shouldn't be an everyday anything. Walker should be the option at 2nd next year. I like Hairston for the bench too and I agree that Walker should be the starter.
  3. What are Clemens winshares?
  4. Maybe he will sell it on EBay. :D He'll need the cash.
  5. It looks like he put used gum in his ear.
  6. He does play the best RF ever according to Sutcliffe. Burnitz has to be used right to be effective and Baker well.....
  7. The day isn't over yet. Do any teams that are in contention need a player like Burny...as a starter?
  8. That is one fine tradition and I'm jealous, great job!!!
  9. I don't have my Historical Baseball Abstract handy, but I know Bill James' research in that book supports the 26-27 peak. The Baseball Prospectus crew is also on board that age range. In fact, that age range seems widely accepted to me in baseball research circles at the moment and not the hotly debated topic you suggest it is. I do agree that there are outliers -- both late and early bloomers. And it's possible that Lee is one of the former. I also think it's reasonable to expect Lee's numbers to drop next season based on his age and career numbers to date. I wonder if the steroid players will skew those numbers.
  10. I wonder what kind of haul the Cubs could get for Nomar? Would Nomar still be considered a Type A free agent if the Cubs do offer him arb? I don't the Cubs would but I was wondering. I heard on either the Score or ESPN that Nomar was not put through waivers. Really? That would make me think that Hendry would either want him back or thought the injury would last longer or be too bad to trade. Can the Cubs still put him on waivers since tomorrow is the deadline?
  11. Maybe a few games better. But I just don't see how you can compare Dubois, Murton and Cedeno to Franceur, Johnson, McCann and Bettimit. I don't know why some people think playing kids is the answer. It's not. Playing good kids is. I will go on my soapbox again. They seem to always have kids who are already ready to play when brought up. Our guys seem to still have to be taught. Age is about the only thing our kids have in common with theirs. You know Dal, maybe the Braves organization has something over the Cubs....it's confidence. Look at Cruz. He struggled here and at Oakland but he pitched well in Atlanta. I think Cox and his staff know how to win the mental aspect of the game for these young guys and that is half the battle. Some young players may be more talented but some are not, they just know how to use them better.
  12. The Cubs sure do seem to have a lot of them. I thought the idea was to trade for postion players with all this young pitching since the Cubs don't prefer to draft them.
  13. But did the Braves have a bunch of bad hops? I doubt it.
  14. Even if he performs well, it will just be because there's no "book" on him yet, though. :D Yeah, Dusty opened himself on that one. JVB didn't go to Virginia Tech or Florida State did he because players from those schools usually get booked. Here I thought that was going to turn into a joke about those being schools where the students don't need books. Those are the only books they have. Those schools just give us too much to use.
  15. I don't completely blame Baker as injuries and lack of talent did the Cubs in but Baker never pushed the right buttons to right the ship in any way, shape or form.
  16. I just glanced at that and thought you wrote FOR Milwaukee.
  17. Even if he performs well, it will just be because there's no "book" on him yet, though. :D Yeah, Dusty opened himself on that one. JVB didn't go to Virginia Tech or Florida State did he because players from those schools usually get booked.
  18. Haha, I hadn't even noticed that. That's just odd. It may mean that not just Hendry sees some value in these guys....not as starters but as value to a team.
  19. I wonder what kind of haul the Cubs could get for Nomar? Would Nomar still be considered a Type A free agent if the Cubs do offer him arb? I don't the Cubs would but I was wondering.
  20. I wish Holla well. I also think that Perez is a nice bench guy and if Baker simply used him as such we would have no problems so I do not blame Perez for what Baker has done.
  21. Yeah, I noticed that too!
  22. Hey...he's going to sit you too...Another young Cub bites the dust.
  23. Before arriving here, all Dusty did was win. Piniella has won a WS and his teams in Seattle were constatntly on the cusp of greatness. Dusty has been to a WS, but all other times in the playoffs w/ the Giants were busts. Look back at the 1st rnd series vs. the Mets in 00' as example 1A. Valentine made him look a guy coaching a Div. III team. My point is that Piniella has been a lot more succesful - and clearly knows how to manage a picthing staff, especially a bullpen. I know a lot of division 3 coaches that are better than Baker.
  24. I see classy players like Banks, Williams, Santo and Sandberg uni's hanging up and flying at Wrigley and think about the class Sosa showed...I just can't say yes.
