  1. You mean cheap money. Hendry doesn't let anyone go if it costs the Cubs money. See Rusch for a good example of this.
  2. This is going to be a long long wait.
  3. I hate to say this, but I see Jason Schmidt going to the Mets. Sabean has a recent history of STUPID trades (AJP for Nathan/Bonser/Liriano, Williams/Aardsma for Hawkins, and Hawkins for Kline), and I could see Sabean trading Schmidt for Bannister (or Heilman) and Fernando Martinez, BASED on his recent history. I am saying based on Sabean's RECENT history, not what the Giants. My guess is...Sabean will NOT get enough for Schmidt, if he trades. You are never going to get enough in return if you trade somebody who will be a Free Agent at the end of the year. If Schmidt had another year left on the contract, then you could get more in return. But nobody is going to overpay to rent somebody for three months. If an extension is reached, that would change everything. Victor Zambrano for Scott Kazmir. Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips + Grady Sizemore for 3 months of Bartolo. How about giving up Bagwell for a couple of months for Larry Anderson?
  4. Murton....who's Murton? Is he the kid that works really hard and one of the kids that gets blamed for the great collaspe of 06?
  5. I yell this at the TV everyday that they announce the line ups. This drives me nuts!!! You and me both. I think if Baker made a move like putting Murton at the 2 spot it would make it look like he was wrong for not doing it in the first place so it ain't gunna happen. Dudes got pride to worry about.
  6. He was not completely without options, both with free agents and potential trades for higher priced players. But you are right. His lack of foresight in past years is what really hurt the team coming into 2006. Missed opportunities. True. Drew was a possible I suppose and he signed Burnitz. As you said earlier Hendry's misguided passons for the prototypical leadoff hitter helped make the situation even worse. That's in the past...now Hendry has to fix this mess and do it right this time. IMO, Hendry has done such a terrible job that I look at this roster now and feel that Hendry does not have the capability to fix this team, especially in one year. He needs to go along with Dusty. I don't think he does either but he does have an extension so we'll see if he can redeem himself. Redeem himself? NO WAY! I'm not falling for that one. He's has had several chances starting from 2004 and on to redeem himself. I'm confident in saying that there is no way Hendry will get himself out of this mess. The extension says otherwise. This team doesn't cut anyone if they are owed money as much as some of us would hope they would. heck, he and MacPhail won't even get rid of Baker and his contract is over at the end of the year.
  7. Hendry could have gotten creative with his money and trades. Had he signed Millwood for example, it would have freed him up to trade Prior in a deal for Tejada or Abreu. Instead he settled for Jacque Jones. True again. He just doesn't seem to be a guy that wants to make that big leap. But, if he did trade Prior a lot of fans would of went nuts on him and that would put more pressure to win. These safe little moves got him an extension. And to be honest, I'm not sure I'd have favored trading Prior even with Millwood in the fold. Hindsight is 20-20. I'm also not getting paid the big bucks to run this team either. There were bats available this offseason. The Cubs had players to get them had Hendry spent wisely and been a little creative. When Hendry came aboard and was chosen the GM I thought this: -This guy knows the minors inside and out and will be great for future growth. -He was an ex-coach so he knew what to look for in a manager -I'm not sure about his player movement ability but the Hundley deal was a stroke of genius and quite creative I thought at the time. Now: -Infatuation with toolsy players and old baseball sterio types. -Horrible choice of manager for what the team had. -Wierd love for overpaying below average players -Always looking for the lightning in a bottle

  9. As a coach...wow defending Baker....when you say you didn't do a good enough job and it's your fault, people start to lose confidence in you. Baker is selling himself as many coaches I have known do and that is to keep players/fans/upper management confident that you can do the job. The confidence you show in yourself gives others confiedence in you. I don't think Baker has done a good job and he may know that but I don't think he will ever publicly say it.

  12. I admire that Pirate team but I loved those Birds and it hurt when they lost. They were my second favorite team until the Jays came around.
  13. What did Hendry have player wise to spend money on last season? He painted himself into a corner by not eating some cash and missing the boat of getting Vlad and Tejada when he had the chance.
  14. Thanks for the numbers. The Phillies never thought of putting Sandberg there and since the Cubs have Patterson at 2nd behind him maybe that's the reason. I just want the Cubs to plug in some strong players from the minors and not just fillers. I think if Moore could do it he could be a very good numbers wise hitting 2nd baseman. That would make it just one less hole for the Cubs to fill.
  15. Kind of like Ryne Sandberg, right? It can be done and it depends on the athlete. Sure, maybe Moore can make the transition that HOF Ryne Sandberg made. Do you agree that what has been said about Moore? He is athletic and has the arm to play third. To me that says he has potential to play 2nd. Why I mentioned Sandberg is because he too was an athletic guy that went from 3rd to 2nd and had decent power. Yes he is a HOF guy but I mention him as a Cub example we all could use. I'm curious on how Moores and Sandbergs numbers match up.

  17. Maybe Lou can use the Gold Glove award along with that manager of the year to tell us what is good and what isn't? Why do people think it's pure gospel when voters vote an award like that? Somebody ask Lou what young guys is he talking about...I'll bet he has no clue and is just preaching some junk Baker said to him while he was doing the game for ESPN.
  18. He's definitely athletic enough to play either position, as I believe he was a SS in Detroit's system for a bit, or at least drafted as one. I'm not sure where more of his problems come from (throwing/hands) defensively, but if it's his arm, he could make a nice move to 2b and be a very good hitting 2b. Or he could be moved to LF and probably do a very nice job. He's got speed, power, and an okay average. Decent job of drawing walks too. Solid IsoD (.064) and pretty decent IsoP (.210). The average could stand to come up a bit, but if he is a .270 hitter with a .335 OBP and .480 SLG in the bigs, he could be a very valuable part of any team, especially with good speed and HR power. I was hoping he was athletic enough to switch postions if he had too and that's good to hear...thanks sporrer!
  19. My sources tell me that despite his occasional on the field tirades, Hendry is absolutely thrilled with Zambrano. My observation is that Z has been more mature this year, especially the last 30 days. I think this negotiation is heading down a very similar path to Lee and Wood from January 2004. So, here's my prediction: the 2 sides will agree to a 1 year $9M deal in January to avoid arbitration, and Hendry will state that he hopes to work out a long term deal by Spring Training. In late February, we'll get the word that Zambrano has agreed to a 3 year $43M extension to the $9M 1 year deal: i.e. total of 4 years and $52M: 2007 - $9M 2008 - $12M 2009 - $14M 2010 - $16M 2011 - $16M team option or $1M buyout That's great to hear Hoops!
  20. Well, I asked these questions last week, and Paul Sullivan has answers today (link requires registration): http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-060709zambrano,1,3490951.story?coll=cs-cubs-headlines Key takeaways: (1) Sullivan's opinion: "Zambrano becomes a free agent after '07 and stands to cash in big with a four- or five-year deal worth $13 million to $15 million per season." (2) Z's thinking: "I'd like to get that done before spring training or in spring training," Zambrano said Sunday. "If not, this is a business. I still have one more year with the Cubs. Hopefully it ends up in a good situation. I don't want to leave Chicago." Hoops My question to you Hoops is how do the Cubs brass feel about Z? I just have this funny feeling they are not thrilled with him for some reason. I really hope I'm wrong.
  21. Thanks for coming on! Who are some of your favorite sports announcers? What players have you seen play this year that you know will be stars at the MLB level? If you could change one rule in baseball what would it be?
  22. Could Scott Moore be moved to left or 2nd base?
  23. What do they have to trade?
  24. I'd trade him if it made the Cubs better but I wouldn't move him just to move him.
  25. You'd want somebody that could on base at a decent clip though right? If Murton can prove he can handle rightys I have no problem with him at the leadoff spot. Of course Baker has to go for that to happen. Boggs led off for the Sox in the 80's all the time. Not saying Murton even approaches Boggs, just saying. I'd love to see Walker leading off, but he's as good as gone (again). Who has the better OBP between Pierre and Walker?
