  1. Roy Oswalt was a 20th rounder too... I'd say he has a fair amount of raw talent. Sometimes every team just misses on a guy's potential. Actually, 23rd round. Though he was 22 and dominated AA when he was there, not 24 like Sing. But again, Sing was sick, which killed a full year. In this way, I like to think of him as 23!
  2. Shipman has indeed been impressive. In 51 IP, he has yet to allow a home run. Opponents are hitting just .230 of of him. He's k'ing a lot of batters, and he's allowed a lot less hits than the number of innings he has pitched. Anyone have a scouting report on him? How hard does he throw? How many pitches does he have? Should it tell us something that Aardsma is being used as a set up man for Shipman? BTW, just looked at Pinto's numbers again. I'd like to see him get another shot at Triple A soon. His numbers are just so good.
  3. Just noticed that Zach Duke and his 4-0 0.92 ERA was a 20th rounder as well. While I agree that such guys are in a small minority, they do make great stories.
  4. Roy Oswalt was a 20th rounder too... I'd say he has a fair amount of raw talent. Sometimes every team just misses on a guy's potential. Agreed. But overwhelmingly that's not the norm. Neither Sandberg or Boggs were early round draft picks either.....
  5. And Van Buren with another perfect ninth...TWO k's. I really hope that Jermaine gets a chance with the Big League club someday. He's dominated both Double A and Triple A.
  6. Van Buren Brownlie Aardsma ....all continuing to make cases for future bullpen slots with the Cubbies! Nice job once again by all three. Also, Fontenot just keeps on hitting and getting on base. He should absolutetely be on the Cubbies next year (barring a trade). He would be a great super infield sub. Certainly better than Macias.
  7. Congrats Aaron on having such a terrific season so far! What do you consider your greatest strength as a player? That is, what are you BEST at? Conversely, what do you most need to work on as a player? Here's to continued success for you.
  8. I think Welly is a very good prospect. I think Hendry values him more than most casual fans. He's spoken very highly of Welly and his potential. Welly seems to be starting to put it together in Iowa.
  9. True, but they are not playing .500 ball. Since the All Star break, they've won 3 out of 4 series...and split 1.
  10. I, for one, am glad that we're not giving away the farm for a player such as Huff. I have faith that Hendry will not overpay. If Houston lands Huff, you can be sure it at the expense of their future. This is only good news for the Cubs.
  11. I never ripped on Corey, cause at least Corey usually provided excellent defense. He always also brought speed if he was on the basepaths. But mostly, he wasn't blocking anyone that would clearly do the job better. Holly, on the other hand, is playing instead of Murton, who could not have done any worse today than Hollandsworth has...there's no way to do worse! Dusty, buy playing Holly and not Murton, has surely cost us one run today and as many as 3.
  12. I think you have a good point about "a light going on." There are many examples of a "light" going on for a player, and suddently all previous projections are off. Off the top of my head: Melvin Mora, Luis Gonzalez, Jose Guillen, and perhaps now Derek Lee! In the Cubs system, it appears a similar light has been turned on by Montanez, Cedeno, and Hill. A light certainly went on for Wuertz last year. A light seems to have gone on for Van Buren last year as well....
  13. Boy, I'm glad Holly is in this lineup! Surely Murton couldn't have a better at bat than that! I mean, I'm sure the young guy is tired after last night. BTW, the Giants announcers just said that Dusty is planning to continue to start Neifi most of the time when Nomar is back...cause Neifi's had SUCH a good year. :!:  :(
  14. I don't understand why Dusty doesn't understand that people with high OBP should bat high in the lineup, and people wiht low OBP should not. Macias should NEVER lead off. NEVER. It's giving him more at bats than Lee, Ramirez, Walker, Barrett, etc. Heck, I'd rather have Lee lead off than Macias. Macias shouldn't be playing for that matter. I feel confident that Murton could play as good or better a center field as Macias...and Murton could lead off! Burnitz could play center. This is so ridiculous. Woo hoo! 1,000 posts! Only took me two years and three months.
  15. On K's: I'm not convinced that Sing's strikeouts are a problem, especially since he walks so much. How many of us would love to have Adam Dunn's production on the Cubbies? Well, compare stats: Sing: 300 AB, 60 BB, 84 Ks, .410 OBP, .580 Slugging Dunn: 326 AB, 72 BB, 104 Ks, .396 OBP, .583 Slugging (BTW, has anyone seen Tim lately? I haven't noticed any posts from him in a long time.)
  16. When talkin about Sing's age relative to the league, I think its also very important to remember why it's taken him a bit longer to make it through the system. If I'm not mistaken, Sing had quite the sickness to deal with. This sickness essentially shot his 2003 into bits. For this reason, I don't think its fair to say "he's 24, so too old to be a top prospect." It has taken him longer to advance through the system than some because of a reason entirely unrelated to his baseball skills.
  17. Wow, 3rd consecutive Jaxx pitcher to win the award: Nolasco, Pinto, Marmol. Go Cubbies farmhands!
  18. Will Montanez be eligble for Rule V?
  19. Woo hoo! His struggled with his control in his last start at Iowa. He couldn't get the curve over the plate. Hopefully that was a random occurence. It certainly has been the only occurrence of that magnitude this year. His last appearace on the Cubs was tremendous. That's what I'm looking for tomorrow!
  20. I really like what he has to say about Montanez. It's very encouraging. "The best pure hitter in the league."
  21. Yeah, I remember that conversation as well. If I recall correctly, Hendry ALSO said in the same interview that they still see Welly as having the chance to be a good starter down the road. They were only putting him in the bullpen in the short term in order to help the Cubs in the short term.
  22. Wow, of all the Cubs starters today, Ryu has the highest ERA at 3.34. That's some pitching! I'm really eager to see how Welly does today. He's had two very good starts since the All Star Break. I'm hoping that he's turned the corner as a starter. If he's turned a corner, he could either be an excellent trade chip, or he could really help the Cubs dwon the stretch. I'm curious...how hight does everyone see Welly's ceiling as? Does he still have the potential to be a #2 or #3 starter? Or is that stretching it. He throws the ball quite hard after all.
  23. I have a hard time comparing pitchers with position players in my rankings, so I did two separate rankings. Here's mine! Pitchers 1. Marshall 2. Guzman 3. Gallagher 4. Pawelek 5. Hill 6. Petrick 7. Wellemeyer 8. Pinto 9. Marmol 10. Johnson Honorable Mention: Aardsma, Wylie, Nolasco, Van Buren Position Players 1. Pie 2. Harvey 3. Murton 4. Dopirak 5. Patterson 6. Moore 7. Cedeno 8. Sing 9. Fontenot 10. Greenburg Honorable Mention: Theriot, McGehee, Reed, Soto
  24. hurray Welly! two great starts in a row. this can only really help the cubs.
  25. More props to Fuld: he was on base 4 times yesterday.
