  1. Any discussion of the minor league player of the year surely has to include Sean Gallagher. His numbers have suffered of late because he's probably tired, but this does not diminish what an amazing season he has had. He's only 19 y.o. after all! The 40+ scoreless innings to begin the season might in and of themselves merit the award. Cedeno, Murton, Hill, Harvey, Patterson, Sing, Marmol, and Montanez are all worthy nominees. For me: Pitcher of the year: Gallagher (nod over Hill, Pinto, Marmol, Nolasco) because of his age and scoreless streak. Position player of the year: Cedeno (nod over Sing and Patterson due to his age and the level he is at...plus he plays shortstop.) My vote in the end: I'm leaning toward Ronnie Cedeno. I lean this way in part because of the vast IMPROVEMENT he's shown this year. His game has grown leaps and bounds, which has to be attributed to very hard work.
  2. Even if Ramirez misses only a few days and he's not put on the disabled list, the Cubs should still call someone up. Our bench is already short by having 12 pitchers on staff. We can't afford to be minus another bat. So even if Ramirez is not DL'd, the Cubs should send down Wellemeyer and bring up a bat. My choice would probably be Fontenot.
  3. Interesting list. It shows at least some of the prospects that the Cubs brass value. Guzman -- not a surprise. Murton -- expected as much. He's major league ready. Will give him the chance to fine tune...to try to drive the ball more. Sing -- I'm glad to see him on here. It indicates that the organization has taken notice of him to some extent. Aardsma -- Also not a surprise. He's close to the bigs and has a decent upside. Patterson -- A little of a surprise since he is in low A. This is similar to Dopirak last year, when he was sent to the fall league. EPatt is older though and played in college. I'm glad the Cubs are sending him. I wonder with a good Fall if he could begin next year in West Tenn. next to Dopirak (assuming he doesn't repeat Daytona). Coats -- Probably the biggest suprise for me. To be sure, he's had a godo year and is a solid prospect. His defense in particular needs work. I wonder how the Cubs choose who to send to the Fall League. Why did they choose Patterson or Coats, for example, but not Theriot or McGehee (or even Fontenot). Do the Cubs prefer Coats? Or, why Aardsma and why not other relievers in the system? Also, why not Pie? Will he be in Winter League?
  4. Well we know that neither Cedeno or Murton will be in it!
  5. Ack! This move stinks. Maybe his OBP was too high in the Cubs eyes. Too many clogged bases. Grrrrrrrrrr. Doesn't Murton have to be on the 25-man roster BEFORE Sept. 1 to be eligible for the playoff roster?
  6. That's a great interview, thanks for posting the link. Brownlie sounds intelligent. It also sounds to me as if he has a very good idea about what he wants to do when he's on the mound. I like the talk about pounding the strikezone and trusting his stuff.
  7. ha ha i like the signature change! LOL
  8. JC, I have a friendly objection to your signature. I've always remained a fan of Brownlie's. I even started a thread about him and pointed out all the pitchers in the majors that have been successful throwing as hard as Brownlie currently does. So add me on board mister! :D
  9. A Hagerty sighting. So what happened to him? I thought he just had blister problems in the Marlins camp...? Has he had serious arm trouble this year? Has he lost his velocity? He seems on the verge of obscurity.
  10. I guess I'm a big fan of defense. If I'm a GM, I shoot to sign fast, athletic outfielders. I like well-rounded players, such as Derek Lee. Patterson can be one of those players: great in the field, some power at the plate, and speed on the basepaths. I'm with ya Rawaction. I'm REALLY hoping that Corey play strong the rest of the year, so we can see him back. If he doesn't, I also think he will be traded. The ball is in his court. How about Damon, Pie, and Patterson from left to right next year, with Murton as the 4th outfielder?
  11. I've considered him a prospect since he was drafted. I've been calling him one of my favorite minor leaguers ever since. Him and Theriot. It's kinda worked out for Adam, not so much for Ryan. ---- edited to add ---- Check my 2003 pre-season prospect list as evidence of his long-standing status. Seems to be working for Ryan this year! As of right now, I'd rather see Ryan on the 40 man than Lewis.
  12. And his trade value. If Corey performs more toward the level that he is capable of, I see no reason to trade him. His upside still far outweighs the value we would get in return for Corey. Plus, our outfield defense would be tremendous with he and Pie roaming out there. Corey looked very patient today, to answer someone's question. Today, he laid off both high pitches and pitches low and away. I was very encouraged by his approach today. Plus that catch!
  13. Corey looked great today: 3 for 4 with a walk to boot! He hit a double off of a tough pitcher for lefties to hit. He looked patient at the plate. AND he made a tremendous outstretched diving catch in center. Way to go Corey! I have a lot of faith in Corey yet. I hope he's our starting rightfielder next year (Pie in center)! :D
  14. Yeah, it was THE Angel Guzman. ha THANKS! This is really good news. I'd really like to see Angel be able to make the squad out of Spring Training next season. Begin as a set up guy in the pen, and then starting by mid summer if all goes well (to keep the innings down). Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Maddux, Guzman ; ) Then Pinto or Marshall takes Maddux's spot in '07.
  15. I'm confused about whether this is sarcasm or not....Was it Angel or not? It was....right?
  16. I really hope that Cedeno is our starting ss next season.
  17. I just typed one...about two pages of one....only to have it accidentally deleted when my computer program crashed as I was posting! Grrrrrr. So I defer to you, Outshined. I had Pie in Center, Murton in left, Corey in right, (Sing on the bench) I had Cedeno at short (and Fontenot as a utility guy)
  18. Looking forward to reading it DJaxx! Thanks.
  19. Fontenot came over in the Sosa deal. He's had a very good year in Triple A, and even looked good in a few at bats in the majors this year. Expect him to be called up in Sept, and then expect him to make the Cubs out of Spring Training next year. Lewis came over from Atlanta in the Juan Cruz trade. Lewis had a terrific year at W. Tenn last year (his first good year), but has really struggled this year. He has excellent defense. He also has excellent tools. It's too bad that he regressed. He could have been the Cubs starting second baseman next year had he done what he did in Double A.
  20. Wow, quite a day on the farm! 6 wins! Gotta love how the Jaxx pitched to Hermida: Sing's rival for MVP went 0-5 with 4 strikeouts. What does anyone know about Victor Ramos? Yesterday, he struck out the side in his inning of relief for W. Tenn, dropping his ERA to 1.80. Looking at his stats, I notice he started the season in Boise, then was promoted quickly to Peoria, then skipped up to W. Tenn. Is he older or is he a prospect? Another nice day for E Patterson. Gotta love all of his extra base hits. And Mitre belongs as a starter in my opinion. He showed it once again tonight. If Hill struggles in the next start or two, I wouldn't be against giving the ball to Mitre every 5th day. Of course, if the Cubs are out of it, I'd give spot starts to Pinto as well.
  21. How about Greg Maddux?
  22. Wonderful news about Pie! Here's hoping he comes back hot, and doesn't stop hitting...
  23. Sing also made "In The Team Photo" of this week's BA Prospect Hot Sheet. I believe its his first time making the list, which is a list usually reserved for those BA sees as prospects. Harvey also made the Team Photo.
  24. Scoreless first with a K for Brownlie.
  25. Good work...yeah Rich walked the first two batters...but after that, the defense would have been better at single A.
