Being late is not a direct indicator of work ethic, not even close. In a lot of jobs, those who like to show up early and leave late are often just butt kissers trying to make a good impression who aren't actually good workers. We've got a couple. And as you said, you don't know the circumstances. So quit pretending you know where his head is. Taking less talent and more desire 10 times out of 10 is how you end up with a crappy baseball team, 10 times out of 10. Of the guys I have working for me, I'll take the guy who comes in late every time and wish I had 4 more like him. His work ethic is great, I can count on him to do good work without a lot of direction on time and if I need him to come in early he does that, too. I've got others who show up on time, but they also leave on time whether the work is done or not, and not really caring about the quality of the work they do. That showing up on time is clearly a great indicator of their work ethic. Now baseball is different because they usually start the games on time whether all the players are there or not, but to make a general statement that "being late is a direct indicator of work ethic" just doesn't resonate with my personal experience.
