  1. Consider yourself fortunate. In any case, Marshall is pitching a gem. Time for the bats to warm up!!!!
  2. It'd make more sense if it were in reference to Ponson, considering the ham sandwich joke possibilities... I can see that, it just didn't seem to fit the flow of the thread. In any case, Sean Marshall is pitching a gem. Too bad he made that one bad pitch.
  3. Still not sure what Mama Cass has to do with anything but whatever.
  4. I got it. What's Mama Cass doing these days? Not sure what your point is???
  5. I would hope most here would get that!!! And I loved him as a player, but he's wearing thin on me as an analyst. He does TV now? Was not aware. For Arizona?? Has been for a few years. Oh okay. I've never heard Grace doing TV.

  7. Great player, sure, but great man, no. Thus, no immunity from good jokes. I am familiar with the reality of Kirby off the field. But Jacque is just being a good guy trying to honor the man for his achievements between the chalk. It's all good. I know Jacque has to produce on the field otherwise he will get heat here. I'm just hoping it happens. I'm pretty happy-go-lucky, don't take me too serious now! I would like to see Jacque honor Kirby by actually getting a hit. Works for me! 8)
  8. Jacque Jones needs a slump buster. I won't say another word so anyone who gets that, I respect you. :D

  10. Nobody is making jokes about Kirby Puckett. Relax. Trust me, I'm very relaxed. Just making an observation. Simply not a big fan of ripping on Jones this early. He is struggling, I understand. Fans are not patient, I understand. So back to baseball, the Jacque Jones BandWGN thread should solve this tonight!
  11. Marshall is straight money. Made one bad pitch and has not flinched. I'm telling ya, keep the brooms ready. And yes, Jacque Jones "KP" is a tribute to the death of a great player which I feel should be immune to bad jokes but maybe it is just me.
  12. Meh, DP for DLee. But I don't have a bad vibe yet. I think Marshall will be money, he made his rookie mistake. Ponson isn't an ace. I think the Cubs will do fine tonight. Now is the time to kick some ass and make a statement. Build momentum and confidence. 2 runs ain't shizzle. LET'S GO CUBBIES!!!!!
  13. I think Marshall handled himself fairly well that inning. The ump squeezed him and he made a mistake. Well, welcome to the big leagues rook! 8) But aside from that one bad pitch, he handled himself well. He got Edmonds out which shows me he did not get shaken up by the Rolen mistake. Hey Cubs offense, help the kid out here.
  14. Oh lord. Yeah. I don't think that is an argument I would touch. You can't really know what makes a guy tick. Sure, you can make educated guesses but in the end, it is what is. I really thought Patterson would end up being a good player.
  15. Derrek started off like a house afire last year. It was '04 when he had his typically slow start. Thanks. Obviously my memory filter was corrupted by the 2004-2005 debacle. I meant to reference the 2004 season. Yes, last season was a bit different as D. Lee had been a notorious slow starter. I will never claim to be a fountain of knowledge and I'm glad I have peeps here to cover my oversights! :D I guess 2004 and 2005 kind of bled together in my mind. I'm still in denial over the 2003 NLCS.
  16. I agree. Really Corey was a speed guy trying to also be a power guy. Very few can pull off that combo. Lots of guys pull off that combo. Corey's problem was pitch recognition and plate discipline (and possibly bat control). If he sacrifices his power, it won't make a bit of difference except to make him less productive unless he improves in the above abilities. Well I reckon I can edit to say very few with Corey's liabilities can pull it off. Either way, I'm trying to make the same point just not expressing it as clearly as others can.

  18. Why is everybody cheering for this guy? http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005JNHT.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg We are hoping he stops sucking and contributes to the team effort tomorrow. Simple as that. It's easy to boo and rip on a guy who signed for some dollars and starts slow but....I seem to recall Derrick Lee starting a bit slow last season. Yes, it is apples & oranges but I've never been a big believer in throwing a Cubs player under the truck after 5 games. Backtracking, the premise of this thread is that if we hit 3 pages then Jacque will get a hit tomorrow. We've hit that mark so we will see if our cyber influence matters, LMAO!
  19. Jones and Burnitz are pretty much a wash, neither one is good and you can flip a coin as to who will likely have the better year. The reason why Pierre is a better player than Patterson is ability to get on base at a higher ratio rather than speed. Patterson is just as fast and not that far below Pierre in baserunning ability. If Patterson had the same OBP as Pierre, I'd take Patterson. I'm not enamored by Pierre's ability to get on base, it's good in the pure sense of traditional leadoff hitter, but I'd like to see it higher. I also choose not to factor their inability to find a leadoff hitter in the past as a reason to glow about Pierre. You thoughts more or less mirror my own.
  20. Going on a tangent, I attended the NCAA Title game in Indianapolis and scored a couple UCLA National Champions t-shirts after the game. Discounted of course. But I must say, your team had a great year and went further than probably many would have thought. Although I did pick them to win it all. :) Not sure if you made the trip to Indy or not but I'd say if not, go to the next Final Four if you can. It is a great experience. Honestly, the Gators pretty much had homecourt advantage for that title game, it seemed like a 10:1 ratio Gator fan to Bruin fan.
  21. Corey's failings were not speed-related. He had no clue of the strike zone and did not get on base enough for his speed to have full effect. His legs never slumped, just his ability to see the ball, understand the strike zone and put himself on base enough to where his speed would matter. Juan Pierre from my understanding gets on base a bit more frequently. Speed never slumps, but it doesn't do you any good if the speed guys are not consistently getting on base and getting driven home by the power guys. But speed never hurts. It's always better to have at least one or two SPEED guys who can get on base and prevent a team from having to play station-to-station baseball.
  22. 30 packs of Old Style for $10 or less around here, can't beat it. Not that I drink it much yet. Get back to me in 10 years! Although I did like the special edition cans they made for the 2003 season..."2003 What A Year" or something like that. Saved a couple empties to remind of the thrill ride of that season. The bad ending never happened, my memory is a blank after 4.
  23. Tim Hudson getting rocked today. Still can't imagine Roger McDowell as a pitching coach, he was one of the biggest class clown guys I can remember in baseball. Not saying it was a bad thing, just feels weird. :)
  24. Ironically enough, the Cubs win today with the long ball! I favor balanced offense. Don't rely too much on neither power nor speed. Mix the two well and you have an offense less prone to slumps. With balance, if one thing isn't working another strength can carry the load for a day. The thing that bothered me today was the Cubs leaving so many runs on the bases. Need to cash in those runs. The one interesting example of how speed can change the dynamic was the play where Juan Pierre took off running which created a hole right up the middle for Derrick Lee. Gave us 1st and 3rd, one out I believe? But we could not cash in the run obviously. Speed don't slump but it can only do so much. It creates more scoring opportunities through stolen bases, taking the extrabase more successfully, stretching singles into doubles, doubles into triples, etc. That is the thing I like about having a guy like Juan Pierre, he can get to 2nd base without needing the batter to move him over. Fundamentals in baseball overall are not always the best anymore so it's nice to have a speed guy who can take the matter into his own hands.
