  1. A stroll down memory lane. And of course everybody's favorite... And the capper.
  2. Considering a lot of contracts are coming off the books after this upcoming season, this isn't a huge deal. It's $5 million more to spend this season, and $5 million less to spend next season... but Aramis, Kosuke, Silva, Samardzija, and Grabow will be off the books in 2012 with big money going to only Zambrano, Soriano, and Dempster. Sacrificing $5 million next season shouldn't be much of a burden That's $5 million less to spend in a season in which we probably hope to be more competitive *and* have more holes to fill.
  3. Greg Maddux for pitching coach and Steve Stone for GM. (Still not convinced Maddux has any special pitching secrets to impart).
  4. That is equally true for people making $40k a year, and yet about half the country isn't good at it.
  5. After Game 1 of the ALCS, every meatwhatever fan I know was going on about how clearly Texas was done because they were beat "mentally." You have to account for the human factor! They are all eerily quiet now.
  6. It's not that they don't curve. It's that they don't have anywhere near the curve that they appear to, just a slight bend. Something like never deviating more than 6 inches from a straight line.
  7. I'd love to see the percentage of athletes that end up broke or at least needing to keep working for a living. If you aren't good at handling money, and many people aren't, then you can make $30k a year or $3 million a year, you'll still spend it all.
  8. A guy with a .400 OBP is actually offensively worthless 60% of the time, if you look at it that way.
  9. We can probably just close down the Cubs section of the board for awhile. This pretty much covers everything there is to say.
  10. With just a tiny bit of pythagorean luck, the 2008 Blue Jays could have won that division.
  11. Fair enough, my bad. For some reason I was thinking 1990 was the cutoff.
  12. Depends on how much of Dunn's defensive adequacy at first base is real or not. His career WAR numbers are really held down by the 15-30 runs a year he was giving back in the outfield.
  13. Betting against the Reds as a trendy dark horse pick may not have worked out this year, but it's still got a long track record of being a good idea.
  14. Now here's a real reason to rip the guy.
  15. Putting Byrd on base there is sub-optimal strategy. If that's what the opposing team wants to do, let them. There's not enough difference between the bats in the Cubs' middle order for who is batting and who is coming up to make a real dent in the probabilities.
  16. It's the classic Fan Formula of Defensive Value A player's defense is defined as equal to the difference between what offensive stats say the player is worth and what the fan wants to believe the player is worth.
  17. I get the point, I just think it's a silly point. The manager did something he thought was in the best interests of winning the ballgame in front of him, and the stats back him up that it was at least a reasonable option. Rip him for that?
  18. It's not playing for one run.
  19. I think statistically, 1st and 2nd, no outs with ordinary hitters both at-bat and on-deck, sac-ing is slightly better than batting in that situation. Run expectancy isn't much different with runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out versus 2nd and 3rd with one out. So even if you assume a successful sac bunt, you haven't really gotten anywhere. And there's still that chance to fail. And the chance for the defense to fail as well. It's pretty close to a wash, that's why I said 'slightly better.' Either way, it's not a bad decision.
  20. I think statistically, 1st and 2nd, no outs with ordinary hitters both at-bat and on-deck, sac-ing is slightly better than batting in that situation.
  21. That's a stupid argument. If I'm getting power from a non-power position, I can get it from a power position too and have extra power.
  22. *would insert picture of Sosa's 30-30 necklace here if I could find one*
  23. Someone should remind Dibble that he was washed up at 29, so he may not be the best person to ask about this sort of thing.
  24. You got ripped off. You should probably ask for a refund.
