  1. AceCubbies' unnamed source has joined the "Garza will probably be dealt" bandwagon: http://www.bleachernation.com/2011/12/06/winter-meetings-tuesday-morning-garza-wilson-headley-stewart-hudson-barney-russell-pena-zambrano/
  2. Making offers that are sure to be second or third-best on major free agents? He really is Andy MacPhail part II!
  3. How could you tell him? It'd be pretty easy. "We don't think you are a fit, Mr. Zuleta HoffpauirLaHair. Good luck!"
  4. "Inside track," no. But an "opportunity"? That means that there is something that LaHair can do between now and April to make the team. He's not just going away as some have hoped. Epstein doesn't seem like the type to tell a player they are getting an opportunity if they don't mean it.
  5. Everything they've said has represent the band-aid heavy, throw-it-away 2012. Whether they mean it or are bluffing remains to be seen. Except saying that they are committed to winning next year too and that every opportunity to win is sacred. Going with LaHair at 1B is treating next year like a cheap hooker. Maybe he really does want Rodrigo Lopez back.

  7. Alright, broke down and had to have it. Chinese, enjoy all my personal data. Epstein: "Cubs fans are ready for a winner and a plan. It may take longer than some people think, but we'll get there." He's selling the "we aren't going to do anything big" card very hard. Maybe he's sincere, maybe he's bluffing.
  8. I don't disagree with the conclusion, but I don't see anything on that list of arguments that really supports it.
  9. You can get it online if you don't mind downloading shady Chinese spyware. Not worth it, imo, but I can direct people if they want it.
  10. They can also rebuild AND keep Matt Garza. Garza's young enough that even if the Cubs tank for a couple years, he can still be a very key piece of a good team. We own him for two more years.
  11. Because he was a very borderline case, he wasn't particularly well-liked by peers and the media of his time, and HOF voters get off on being withholding.
  12. It just occurred to me that all these leaks about the Cubs making non-serious (i.e. fewer years, fewer total value, higher AAV) offers to Pujols and Fielder is exactly the sort of thing Epstein would let leak out if he wanted to make a serious bid and still have other teams underestimate his interest.
  13. I really, really thought Blauser would be an awesome signing :( Someone really should have told me about BABIP back then.
  14. Good point. Mineaswell do it then.
  15. There are worse gambles than Hudson being a 2 win player for one year, but at his dollars plus the commitment to Headley, you'd start to run into a situation where you can't make the big gains you need to at SP and 1B without more payroll. Getting flexibility in a deal involving Marmol, Soto, Garza, Soriano, Zambrano, or Byrd would do the trick, though. I'm sort of operating under the assumption that we won't be making any superstar acquisitions. If we do, I'll just consider it a nice surprise bonus. Then it shouldn't really matter what 1 year contracts we take on then, right? I'd still like to be efficient with the money we spend.

  17. Hudson is owed $5.5 million with a $2 million buyout next offseason. That's kinda icky, but if you really like Headley, sure.
  18. why? .266 BABIP compared to a career of .302. Slap another 20 points onto BA, OBP and SLG with singles that get through and his slash line looks a lot better last year: 264/309/489.
  19. At that point, I'd rather just keep him. He's still got some value, and I think he can put up better numbers this year than he did last year.
  20. I am so incredibly on board with this. Pujols, most likely, is not.
  21. This is actually my biggest reservation with Albert. Firstly being that even if he is as old as he says, I really don't like the idea of signing ANYONE into their 40's, even Albert. I do appreciate the argument that it's still a worthwhile contract if you're overpaying for him in his later years, but I just feel like that will end up being wasteful at some point, especially as the Cubs are probably a couple years from contending. Second, part of me would definitely be amused if Albert ended up getting the Obama treatment from the sports media. Pujols has made eleventy billion dollars in his career thus far. If he can't get a decent fake birth certificate, his agent sucks.
