  1. $40 million seems like too much unless we have an incredible scouting read on him that says he's getting close to MLB ready. You are really cutting away at the risk:reward ratios at that point.
  2. That's really, really high praise. Goldstein is a wannabe scouting nerd, and guys like that are *really* reluctant to give out 80s, or even hint about giving out 80s.
  3. We need to somehow finish pure last with awesome performances from longterm assets ruined by horrible performances from shortterm gets.
  4. Do we have any ladies?
  5. I can't believe this team is going to go from 15-20 to 19-40. I guess I was just being a fan, but I really thought there was a few specks of talent here and there to keep this from happening.
  6. And just like that, the best thing about this season so far has a worse than average ERA.
  7. Knees still hobbled...still crazy expensive...still Alfonso Soriano...value not changing. If we're actually willing to pay 90% of his contract, I could see an AL team giving us SOMETHING of value back. Why? He's still Soriano, he's still old and still injured. Because a little more than half the teams in the league are getting less out of LF than they'd likely get from him, and some of those teams are actually trying to win games this year.
  8. That assumes that we are trying to put together a winning team in the near future.
  9. Vogelbach has definitely not been impressive in EXST. He's hitting, but the power isn't there.
  10. BABIP .227 K% 22% BB% 10.2% HR/FB%: 15.7 GB/FB%: 56.6% (vs. 39.9% career) LD%: 15.6% The line drive percentage has cooled off significantly, but he should still be getting better results from this. The sharp increase in ground balls isn't ideal, but it should be netting him a lot more singles and BABIP.
  11. At this point it would be unacceptable. They spent no money in free agency, landed no big targets, can't spend big on the draft and pretty much put their eggs in this basket. Even when they do sign him, unless it's all signing bonus, I'm going to wonder where a lot of the baseball budget went. There's a lot missing.
  12. Adrian Cardenas: No. 74 BA prospect pre-2009 Ian Stewart: No. 38 BA prospect pre-2008, hitting 25 HRs in the majors in 2009 So, umm, no.
  13. Stewart's peripherals have just about caught up to his actuals.
  14. At this point I think Cubs fans should just accept 2015 as the year to look forward to. If we somehow start competing in 2014 then that's just a bonus. Plus although this year is terrible and next year will probably be more of the same without much improvement, even if we don't compete in 2014, we should see some clear improvement during that season, as I don't believe the FO is going to open up the check book to fill any holes we might have going into 2015 if the team finishes last in the MLB in 2014. Ideally this year we finish 62-100, next year 65-97, 2014 79-83 and then compete in 2015. If we aren't trying to compete in 2013 and 2014, there will be an epic amount of money left on the table. I guess that's where the Wrigley expansion will come from or something.
  15. Someone said that later in the chat, and Goldstein insisted he was a draft-eligible sophomore next year.
  16. Cubs stuff from Goldstein chat: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/chat/chat.php?chatId=934 And my least favorite...
  17. Because he was one of my favorite players and the [expletive] backwoods morons in charge completely ruined his career and called him a [expletive] for it. This.
  18. You guys are overthinking it. The walks are a tiny bit down, but I'm not even sure it's big enough not to just attribute it to variance. Last year: 307/341/432 This year: 310/324/432 Pretty much the exact same player.
  19. What are you guys so worried about? I trust Epstein and Co. not to tank an entire season or two. Every chance to win is sacred.
  20. Went into the hole and made a long, hard throw to save Concepcion's scoreless line. He definitely seems to have the athleticism to stick.
  21. I'd love to see a thread on this at some point. How badly do we want the No. 1 overall pick? On the one hand, that's obviously a huge asset. On the other, it would mean that we'd have to be really, really bad the rest of the season, and that means some long-term assets we are hoping will appreciate will have to perform badly. Unless we can somehow manage to suck entirely on the backs of the expendable veterans while Rizzo, Castro, Samardzija dominate.
  22. Baez 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Definitely not overmatched at this level by any stretch.
  23. That makes me feel a lot better. True or not, it gives me something to grasp on.
