    I know I'm changing my tune from March and April, but at this point, I want something for LaHair. A guy who slots into the 11-20 range in the Cubs organization. But I look at all the contenders who are getting awful offense from 1b and LF, and I'm not inclined to just give him away. My guess is he goes to the Pirates. He'd fit perfectly for them and wouldn't cost them any budget room.

    I don't see why. Moneyball referenced it heavily. It was a huge portion of the Red Sox early 2000s drafts. Other teams followed in a copycat industry.

    Players ares till cheap during their arbitration years. Unless you don't think Garza for $15.45 million the last two years wasn't cheap.

    For the other side of the coin, here's what an organization can do if it's actually good at developing players. Pre-2004 BA Boston Red Sox top 10: 1. Hanley Ramirez, ss (25.7 career bWAR to date) 2. Brandon Moss, of (bust, but became key piece in Jason Bay/Manny Ramirez swap) 3. Jon Papelbon, rhp (16.3) 4. Jon Lester, lhp (22.7) 5. Anibal Sanchez, rhp (13.0) 6. Dustin Pedroia, ss (27.8) 7. Luis Soto, ss 8. Kelly Shoppach, c (6.9) 9. Abe Alvarez, lhp 10. Manny Delcarmen, rhp (3.5) That's a pretty insane hit rate, and the guys who made that happen now run the Cubs.

    We have no idea how Hoyer will operate in this environment, of course, but the Epstein model in Boston was to never be afraid to send a boatload of top prospects in exchange for a premium MLB talent.

    I'd have to put Jackson firmly at No. 5 with Junior Lake catching up to him quickly. A 30.4% K rate in AAA is just brutal, and he's shown 30% now across two partial seasons. The chance that he never becomes an acceptable MLB hitter is becoming very real.

    ^ That makes a lot of sense, actually. The guaranteed $30 million gives him a nice floor, but the arbitration process will still make him a bargain if he hits his ceiling.

    I think you're underestimating how hard it is to move up the upper-ends of the farm system rankings. Adding a bunch of nice guys to the back end of your top-10 isn't enough.

    I think you definitely would still see impact prospects move for someone like Garza (or the Cubs wouldn't move him) - it seemed like he was mainly talking about rental players like Dempster, wouldn't you agree? I honestly don't know. Nothing would surprise me between now and the deadline.

    Law on ESPN Radio right now, tells people to seriously tone down their expectations for the type of prospects you can get in deadline deals because of the new CBA. Doesn't expect any impact prospects to move.
