  1. But anyway, yeah, if we binge on free agents this offseason, then we can get better really quick. The post you replied to was discussing yet another article where Epstein heavily implied that he has no intention of doing that.
  2. As others have noted that offense is just super-duper terrible. I'll take the under on a .600 MLB OPS from the combination of Jackson and Vitters.
  3. Yes. Changed CBA or not, Boston's drafting success had as much to do with their scouting and development as it did with their willingness to overslot. Hendry produced average results with above-average resources. The reason wasn't because of his approach to the major-league team. It was because the drafting and development completely failed under his watch.
  4. I *think* it's the black rectangle in the upper left of the scoreboard.
  5. I think it's kind of interesting that we have an organization willing to do that. Filling your roster with worthless, cheap veterans so as to not have to rush prospects or spend money when you don't want to is the kind of tactical move you'd usually see people talk about on message boards but no front office would actually do.
  6. If you can't ask a 22-year-old to start hitting in the majors after a half-season at AAA, then really, what good is he?
  7. Well we were talking about building a serious/annual contender. That's roughly what it would take to do it. If we were just trying to keep the team around .500 and treading water like the old FO last offseason we probably would have re-signed Aramis, signed E. Jackson, signed on of Dejesus/Cespedes/Willingham, add a overpriced bullpen arm or two and probably brought Pena back. I guess that team would be a "contender" in a broad sense but certainly not a serious one or one that people would think would be around for years. Would that have been so bad? Theo's legacy was as a drafting and development expert who built from the later rounds and the end of the first round. Why couldn't he build all that here while still giving them a chance to fluke into a 2006 Cardinals situation?
  8. When Epstein talks like that, it starts to seem so appealing. Who wouldn't want to watch a team grow from draft day to World Series? But unless we clean up even better than we hope in the Garza/Dempster/everyone trades this July, I don't see how that's feasible. If Jackson busts, you've got exactly two positions filled with homegrown potential stars, and the next guy to have even a chance of being an impact talent after them is Lake in 2014. I don't see how you could build a playoff-quality lineup with that method even by 2015. And the pitching is even further behind.
  9. Calling up Valbuena is of course the right call. Vitters is barely holding his own at AAA, no need to ruin the development curve for him. That said, it's kind of funny how far the Cubs have extended the concept of organizational filler into the majors. If Stewart never really recovers this year, what does he get in arbitration and do you non-tender him?
  10. Typical Castro not coming up in big situations.
  11. He's just reading off the top of the Baseball-Reference Similarity Scores list. I think he wrote that stat? It's not the absolute worst comp I've heard recently (Rizzo to Ryan Howard). From age 21-24, Templeton put up bWAR of 3.4, 2.9, 4.2 and 4.4. Did he get hurt or something? He played in 80 games in his age 25 season, and then mysteriously lost his hit tool for the rest of his career. After this season, he should drop down Castro's comp list. There just aren't too many 21-year-old SS's with 200-hit seasons to compare him to.
  12. He'll do whatever the [expletive] he wants.
  13. I go back and forth on Garza being overrated. He's 31st in MLB in xFIP for qualified pitchers, and 57th in FIP. That's usually around good enough to be the best starting pitcher on the market at the trading deadline. But I still feel weird confidently expecting to get a top prospect for a guy with a 4.16 ERA.
  14. And that 19-year-old has already won a title with that team. So that's got to be a good omen for this one to do the same.
  15. That kid is 19! Let me tell you, that is the kind of talent that can bring a franchise back from dead. Is this a reference to something or are you really talking like that? Reference.
  16. That kid is 19! Let me tell you, that is the kind of talent that can bring a franchise back from dead.
  17. I agree, but then on the other hand it's just so hard to imagine the Cubs just letting so much payroll disappear. If Garza is traded and we do another Pittsburgh Pirates offseason, the payroll might not reach $65 million. If they want to just sit on that money and save it for future seasons, that'd be a pretty novel approach. Has any major sports team ever done that?
  18. It may be Stockholm Syndrome, but I've just accepted that it may be a possibility that's their intent.
  19. There was a surprising amount of real content inside all the Theospeak there. Said that going into the season, they weren't sure if Castro could develop into a MLB SS long-term, but he answered those questions well and they really like him there now. Really emphasized building a team from the minors and letting the fans see it grow from draft day to playoffs. More or less admitted that Rizzo's call-up will coincide with someone getting dumped.
  20. Twitter just blew up because a couple reporters tweeted that Theo and Dempster were sitting together, talking, in the third-base seating area. I love being a sports fan in the modern era. It's almost certainly nothing, but at least I get to see friendly sniping between beat reporters over what side of the field it's happening on.
  21. What was Vada Pinson's story? I came across him the other day while looking for Harper comps.
  22. Not getting promoted to Boise is the symptom, not the problem. The problem is that in EXST he sucked at baseball. I hope that changes in rookie ball.
  23. I keep watching that highlight, and I just can't believe how long he waits on the ball before pulling the trigger. Reminds me of PED-peaked Bonds.
  24. Same age as Hanley Ramirez when the Red Sox traded him. *ducks*
