  1. My agenda is to understand what is happening with the Cubs. When Epstein says he's always been curious about doing something, and then he does it, it's kind of hard not to take his curiosity at face value. The CBA made the difference in that we spazzed out on IFA and pulled back in the draft, sure. This wasn't about what he would have done if there'd been a "bunch of talent," whatever that means. This is about why he did what he chose to do.
  2. Disagree. This wasn't about what they thought was or wasn't best for the franchise as it was when they took over. This was about trying something they'd always wanted to try and finding an owner willing to let them do it. That astoundingly presumptuous. Almost comically so. Let's see. We know Epstein was feeling burnt out by Boston. We know he's said that the pressure to win in Boston got to him and caused him to make mistakes. We know he had meetings with Ricketts during the summer to discuss the direction Ricketts wanted to take the team. We know he's talked about how he always wanted to see what might happen if the "business" didn't force him to try to win right away and just let him see what happened with homegrown talent. It's not hard to connect the dots. The case seems a lot stronger than "Epstein got here, looked around, and decided there was no chance he could build a competitive team."
  3. The peripherals are really pretty except he's an extreme fly ball pitcher. Looks very good to me, but we need about 3 guys like him in order to feel reasonably confident of filling out two rotation spots.
  4. I'm not particularly amused by it, but I guess everyone has their own standard of humor.
  5. Man, the team would have had a chance to be good if not for all those terrible players they had... Why is it OK to be a troll on this forum as long as you root for the Cubs? Why is someone disagreeing with you automatically trolling?

  8. The likelihood that we weren't trying to lose makes some of our front office's decisions even less palatable. "It's OK, we weren't *trying* to put together an amazing array of sub-replacement players. It just happened. You can still trust us in the future."
  9. I seem to recall saying it was silly to laugh at LA when they signed Puig until we had more information.
  10. You can't look at the upsides while ignoring the downsides. You waste the highly valuable pre-FA seasons of the young players you already have. You lose several of the very finite number of years you have to try to win the World Series. You take a revenue hit as fans begin to stop coming and watching. Your failure to fill in holes on the MLB roster can create problems for several years down the road.
  11. I don't think Epstein would have taken the job under those circumstances. He didn't want to run the Red Sox West. He wanted a different challenge because he was burned out in Boston.
  12. That does make me feel a little better.
  13. What's there to say? It's going to come down to "Spending $20 million on a McDonald's makes it okay to slash payroll," to be rebutted by "Uh-uh."
  14. That's more content than I'd like them to be with a guy who just put up a .780 OPS in A+. Because they should listen to me on prospects.
  15. And Baez. Even if he sticks at SS in the minors, it's not like he'll be pushing Castro off if it comes to that. That said, Villanueva projects to have an Ok bat and a very good glove. If he reaches that, that's a valuable player nowadays at 3B. Sure. But you could say "if he reaches his projection" about almost any prospect. He's a long way away and he's not particularly premium.
  16. Tim's right, but Concepcion..."mid-level"...
  17. I really hope they are not content with Villanueva.
  18. I'm not sure I'd put take the over on 64 starts from Liriano, McCarthy and Villanueva in a single season.
  19. This is a statement of fact that you, or anybody else at this point, cannot possibly know to be true: It is a statement of fact, but I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in the world who can know it to be true.
  20. At $26 million just for the posting fee, I'm glad we missed out.
  21. That's true, but it still doesn't say anything about how fixable he actually is.
  22. I guess it depends on how you define 'bad thing.' Would it be better than not signing anyone to fill that spot and riding the Casey Coleman train? Yes. Do I think we can find two better bets with our resources this offseason? Yes.
  23. We've all of a sudden gotten the idea as a fandom that it's really easy to turn bad major league players into good ones via coaching.
  24. The risk is that we're using up one of our rotation spots on a guy who walked 5 per 9 last year.
