  1. So our breakout seasons are Kevin Gregg, Chris Rusin and Cody Ransom, but Samardzija, Rizzo and Castro are all some degrees of disappointing? I hate baseball.
  2. There've been an injury or two, but mostly I'm surprised at how well this team is doing the post-deadline dump and lose maneuver. I didn't think a top-3 pick would be in discussion.
  3. Depends on whether it agrees with what I believed or not.
  4. Net operating profit, which does not include debt repayment. It appears that the Tribune/Ricketts alliance screwed us with a rather restrictive sales agreement that is cutting in to our ability to spend. No, it appears the Cubs are choosing not to spend as much money for a few years because they don't think they will take too big of a revenue hit while they reposition the entire organization, from facilities to talent assets. Add up the interest payments on the debt and the lost revenue from declining attendance, and I think you'll get pretty close to the lost spending. We're on pace to be down 500,000 fans from 2009. I imagine that's put the tiniest little hit in spending.

  6. The Cubs could spend more, they choose not to. That isn't that issue. I don't believe that to be true or that the evidence points in that direction.
  7. Not sure what the '05 Cubs are doing in there. It makes little sense to avoid spending money because you are scared you might end up in a position to not spend money. That's locking in the downside for no additional upside.
  8. You can't let the payroll get to $150m because you might have $30m in overpayments to bad FA bets. Much better to let it drop down to $95m, that way you don't have to risk any overpaying.
  9. None of which trumps them winning the World Series.
  10. Darvish? Free agency is basically dead anyway, so it's hard to get too annoyed by this sort of thing, even if I want to be.
  11. Unless the combination of lower attendance and starting the renovations are squeezing the payroll far lower?
  12. We've had a lot of this pixie dust this year. Our actually good players and the bullpen have been the problem.
  13. He can always do the "we finally got his mechanics worked out and now he's awesome" thing, but last I checked, he presently sucks.
  14. I'll be surprised and disappointed if Baez isn't in almost all top 10s.
  15. I said important. I have trouble putting Soler on that list, though I can't say he doesn't belong there. Vizcaino lost a season. Szczur still didn't break out, but I wasn't all that high on him to begin with. Paniagua sucks.
  16. The prospect pundits are always a bit behind. They are going to be really blown away when they sit down in the offseason to catch up on all the systems and they see how well the Cubs did this year in terms of development. So many guys had good years. I'm having trouble thinking of important prospects who didn't. Maybe Soler?
  17. Probably, but it's close. People creamed their pants over minor league box scores back then, too, although NSBB didn't exist.
  18. Anything's possible, but I have a really hard time seeing that. Starting next year, I think you are going to have to really force your way into the Cubs' roster if you aren't an elite prospect. Johnson doesn't seem like he's going to do that when you could just as easily give him another year in the minors.
  19. And now Rivero's in. It's just a barrage of interesting.
  20. That sounds an awful lot like "we're going to be outbid."
  21. At least you remember what hand he throws with. And that he's not Japanese. I thought he was Korean but pitched in the Japanese league.
  22. Dang it, you got me. I always forget David Price isn't as good as his reputation.
