  1. Open the darn books, Cubs. Nothing to do but wait and see.
  2. Well, to start with, we didn't spend $106m on major league payroll last year. If you're going to subtract what we sold off, I'm going to add in signing bonuses that were paid in full and it's going to be extremely close, so that's why I keep it at that figure. OK, then I'm going to throw in the even deeper lost revenue from no-shows that aren't reflected in just the lost ticket sales.

  4. Because no owner in the history of sports has *ever* foolishly thought he could improve on his front office's decisions with just a little input?
  5. But what happens when we lose to their All-'Murican Boys and have to hear that it's all because our team is full of lazy hotheads who don't play the right way and aren't team players.
  6. I saw the first fan reference today to 2017-2018 being when the rebuild pays off, no sooner.
  7. I miss Sosa and having a 60-HR guy in the lineup. Hurry up, Javy.
  8. This. I'll give them a shiny nickel for compensation and nothing more.
  9. The one thing we didn't have. We have the worst luck.
  10. Greater than 5% chance? Like 100%, I'm guessing. Done deal.
  11. "just another good relief arm" as if those are so easy to find. I want a hundred Riveros.
  12. Yeah, forget the stupid Playoff Series That Shall Not Be Named. The real hurt is how amazingly horrifying the last decade has been when *everything* seemed to be pointing up. Some of it was bad management, but a lot of it has been flat-out bad luck.
  13. I honestly thought there was no way they could top having an OT Cup winner from my favorite player, but that was even better. To go from thinking about game 7 to barely having time to think about OT before getting into the countdown, unbelievable. I still have this on my bookmarks bar and listen to it all the time: http://wgnradio.com/2013/06/25/the-incredible-final-minutes-of-game-6/
  14. Nobody loves a good doom boner more than me, but let's not do this.
  15. I could see the Cubs keeping Baez down until September if they really think he needs to tighten things up, even if on raw talent he could be in the majors immediately.
  16. Maybe we knew all along that Girardi wouldn't leave New York and just used this as a way to look like some money might be spent and build a little cheap buzz, like that 5/$150 deal we supposedly offered Pujols or something.
  17. That sounds like another awful team. That's the most likely result in just about any scenario.
  18. I like to get pissed in advance.
  19. The problem is, everything we have to look forward to, the Cardinals have too. So it's not like we can just count off the days until their window slams shut like the Brewers.
  20. It's almost not fair for them, we should give them an extra pick every couple years high in the draft to even things out. 10 years ago today, the Cubs won Game 4 of the NLCS. Since that day, the Cubs have won zero playoff games and the Cardinals are about to win their 45th. It's pretty depressing. The only other teams to not win a playoff game since then: Toronto Kansas City Seattle And this was at a time when we had a ton of young players and an elite farm system, so the future seemed *awesome*. I hate baseball.
  21. Better get a hell of a lot more than that if they're trading Samardzija. The offseason seems like an awful time to trade Samardzija. Besides the options that won't cost teams anything but money, there's Price available as well.

  23. That depends on how much we spend on the renovations and how much attendance keeps falling. Soriano's contact comes into play in that we are paying for a lot it, so it comes out of the budget.
  24. Just from the general buzz from other teams about who they might be interested and how much money is out there to be spent, I continue to believe that he most likely scenario is that the Cubs do all their due diligence and work very hard to pursue a few key, high-priced pieces, only to be blown out of the water on the actual bidding.
  25. The fact that you'd have to lie to fake him out shows that he hasn't overplayed his hand at all.
