  1. Please do not give Ricketts any ideas. Also, I think that was the original market inefficiency, like back in the Al Spalding days.
  2. Which is higher: Tanaka's posting fee + first two years of his contract or Cubs' 2014 MLB payroll
  3. I voted yes, but to imply it's impossible to say no is silly. You could lead with 197 losses over 2 seasons and quite unlikely to compete in season 3. Screwed up Castro. Wasted a lot of money on bad and hurt pitching last season. Failed at their first attempt to hire a manager. There's enough to plausibly vote either way.
  4. Given the level of resource commitment to that farm system, that's basically a par. So you voted no? Good for you. Well, your argument didn't exactly sell me on "yes," let's put it that way.

  6. Sorry, I'm taking the under for 9 million being the new cost of a win based on this one deal. I don't doubt salary inflation, but I do doubt this deal as the new norm. The worst part of this deal is that it probably pushes the Indians closer to giving Ubaldo the qualifying offer, if they were on the fence before. I bet this isn't the last contract this year that pays $9m/win in some estimates.
  7. Seriously, this is how it's going to be all offseason. Everybody needs to recalibrate their expectations for what FAs should get.
  8. Apparently we're using the radar system from Top Gun.
  9. I assume Soler has some place that he lives when not on active duty for the Cubs. That would be his home.
  10. I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you all about the great sport of cricket. It's exactly like baseball except better in almost every way.
  11. AKA eat [expletive], hockey. *concedes*
  12. They've always been pretty interchangeable.
  13. That is the most wrong anybody has ever been in the history of the Internet.
  14. If the Cardinals lose, then I have to hear about how brilliant Theo just won his third world title for them and we should just trust him that the team being terrible is good because look at what he did in Boston employing a completely different strategy.
  15. A pitcher with serious success in MLB > A position player with serious success in the MWL
  16. Now that you said it, I kind of think that too.
  17. Horsepoop he's spending more money than the Tribune did.
  18. Doing some back of the napkin, without Samardzija and Barney, you could fill out the roster for about or maybe even under $60m.
  19. If they trade Barney and Samardzija, we better be getting Tanaka and Cano if they want to get the payroll back to $100m.
  20. You should totally do scouting projection. But there's an important difference between projection and ceiling. Scouting projection is "here's where I think this guy is going to go." Ceiling is "where could this guy end up if everything goes well, but not too well because we don't want to sound crazy and really anybody can be anything."
  21. Basically, all of this. Shocking, but I was having this argument about the meanings of words with someone else the other day on the internet. Basically, there's a reason that scouting reports use "present" and "future projection" and not "floor" and "ceiling." They aren't the same thing, and the latter two are almost universally obsessed over by fans, but they don't mean a whole lot.
  22. I'm going to be in St. Louis on Saturday. I wonder if it'd be more annoying to be there if they win tonight or if they are playing tomorrow.
  23. Because ceiling is stupid and doesn't even really mean what it seems like it should mean.
  24. I'm not super-good at keeping track, but he's seemed a little more out the outside since the new regime took over. I still think he's a local beat writer.
