  1. She's a Chicago reporter. I can't remember where now, but she's been all over the place. I'm legit excited, but probably prematurely.
  2. If Julie's in, I'm all-in. This is happening. Ready the celebratory GIFs.
  3. Location is really important to every free agent, and then 80% of them sign for the most money and deny it was about the money. I hope Tanaka is one of those.
  4. He's said that they are fairly confident and are clearly one of the top bidders.
  5. MLB has been more or less the industry standard for monetizing the internet. I think they'll be fine.
  6. I didn't actually read it because it's Kaplan.
  7. And as the deadline approached, we could have seen the chatter pick up on the Cubs or die off. The fact that it's the former has me more excited than I was.
  8. There's been several very specific reports in the last 36 hours connecting the Cubs more intensely than we'd seen in the week or so before.
  9. For argument's sake, let's say the rumor put a very specific number on it, and it was right in line with what you'd expect from a market bigger than Philadelphia and smaller than LA.
  10. Everything just looks so much rosier with Tanaka in place. You could hit next offseason with this already in place: ???/Sweeney/??? Bryant/Castro/Baez/Rizzo Castillo Tanaka/Samardzija/Wood/Jackson/(Arrieta or Hendricks) A bunch of bullpen guys (there are also variants with Alcantara or Olt winning jobs, and maybe Lake does like a Dom Brown or something, but whatever). If anyone said that team wasn't close enough to make major free agency make sense, they would get punched in the face. But take out Tanaka, and you have to spend all your efforts and resources finding a TOR pitcher before you even know if it makes sense to add more, and you probably trade Samardzija as well.
  11. I think what's skewing his perception is all of the Cubs/Tanaka chatter of the last couple of days combined with the other big rumor...but that's just me. There's suddenly a lot of Cubs chatter *and* there's good reasons why all the other big teams might be out: Yankees - Thanks to Rodriguez suspension, actually have a chance to reset luxury tax. Angels - Keep insisting they aren't really in Dodgers - May have finally reached their limit with Kershaw extension
  12. I love and hate that my excitement is rising on this. It's starting to feel realistic.
  13. Were you not around enough during the Brian Roberts/Jake Peavy sagas? Yeah, and that's more fun at least than a boring offseason where nothing happens.
  14. It's a long offseason. News should be released this way more often, makes things at least a little more interesting.
  15. Here was the timeline: Ty said he had news I tweeted something about anxiousness at him Ty tweeted back that he'd DM me before he posted it, but he was waiting on a second source Ty DM'd me I assumed that meant he was going to post it soon, so I went ahead and posted something to let people know that this would be worth paying attention to, because I thought it would be up that night. Ty got cold feet when he couldn't find a second source to confirm and tweeted that he regretted putting it out there. So now I'm stuck between wanting to share something cool and wanting to respect the guy who told me something he didn't have to tell me. At this point, it shouldn't be hard to figure out what it was pertaining to.
  16. There's a ton of smoke all blowing in the same direction at this point. As always with the Cubs, getting things actually done and final and official is never as easy or fast as we'd like.
  17. I think he's had some independent sources in the past, but not extremely deep and always insisting he report on background.
  18. The current set of rumors match two possibilities: 1) Tanaka isn't interested in the Cubs and is using them to try to prop up the leverage. 2) Tanaka knows that the Cubs have the best offer, but is trying to use his last week to drum up some interest from the Yankees (who may have decided to stay under the luxury tax now that A-Rod's situation makes that realistic) or the Dodgers (who may be waiting for other opportunities later or just have finally reached their limit).
  19. If it hasn't happened by Friday night, it's not happening and I'll tell.
  20. Exceeds Expectations. It's right between Outstanding and Acceptable on the OWL and NEWT scale.
  21. Maybe Passan meant that Epstein and Co. didn't want to have to eat into the MLB budget to get those things. I'm still convinced our IFA splurge was paid for by giving away DeJesus for nothing.
  22. I'm not the best at anything, ever. He means reporters, I'm sure.
