  1. Damnit. That's what we should have done this year. Not to mention, if our idea is to trade away space this year, my guess is that's out the window now. No one else is going to need space, if the Yankees spend that much. we don't have that kind of money We were only able to spend $11m or whatever because we gave away David Dejesus.
  2. If it meant going big on years and money? No, I don't think they would. They'd draw a line in the sand on what they thought such a player was worth and get outbid.
  3. I'm not at all confident we'll be offering the most money to any meaningful free agents anytime under the Epstein era.
  4. I know we're not going to, but I'd really like to revisit the idea of moving Arrieta to the pen or at least making it a more open competition for his rotation job.
  5. Projection 74>75 wins. We've got some momentum now!
  6. I'm betting they find him expendable on anything short of a "ZOMG, back on the future HOF track!!!!" season. Not a mere rebound.
  7. There's little to nothing that Alcantara could do this year (within reason) that would make me deem a rebounded Castro expendable. The other two guys, given their status and pedigree skill sets? Sure. I'm ready to deem Castro expendable right now, but apparently we want to wait for his stats to rebound and assume the market price will reflect it when they do. Not that it's the be-all, but ZIPS has Castro with a .319 wOBA this year and Alcantara .314.
  8. And dingers!
  9. And Castro is coming off the worst season out of all of them.
  10. Villanueva is in the picture as well.
  11. Not if you get back a young, cost-controlled player of similar talent at a position where you can use them optimally. That's pretty much the entire point of trades.
  12. If I'm taking bets on which one they trade, I'll take the guy who makes $10m/year pretty soon and pooped the bed when they tried to get him to hit their way. Not saying it's right or wrong, just Theowhispering.
  13. Someone's being used suboptimally in that situation. Bryant may be a 3-win 3b but only a 2-win RF.
  14. Sure, we could do that. But that leaves us with a SS who hasn't adapted well to our preferred offensive approach and is probably the only asset on the team with the value to return the kind of pitching we need to be competitive in 2015/16.
  15. I guess that depends on what you mean by "establish." I don't think you have to have a 3-win season already in the books from those guys to warrant a Castro trade.
  16. But what if we have a full set of other 3-win infielders? I can't imagine a scenario where Olt/Villanueva, Baez, and Alcantara have all established themselves as 3 win infielders this season. Bryant/Baez/Alcantara/Rizzo
  17. But what if we have a full set of other 3-win infielders?
  18. I think the odds of Starlin Castro being a Cub at this time next year are less than 50/50.
  19. It's more like that February slump in 2010.
  20. I still think both teams have some potential to be formidable in the long run, but the Reds and Pirates both have had awful offseasons and the NL Central isn't as scary as it turned out to be last year, if someone can stop the Cardinals from winning 110 games.
  21. I found this comments section enjoyable: http://www.bucsdugout.com/2014/1/28/5355198/a-j-burnett-to-pitch-in-2014-but-maybe-not-for-pirates-according-to The Pirates' front office really messed up this offseason in my estimation.
  22. Vizcaino being ranked in the middle of the top-10 had more to do with how much we loved him before we found out he had Angel Guzman Disease. If there were still a chance for him being healthy, he'd be right there with Edwards and Johnson. Maybe even above both.
  23. If any other team cut a 24-year-old outfielder that was a No. 3 overall pick most recently seen putting up an .891 OPS in AAA, we'd be falling all over ourselves to add him.
  24. I think he's indistiguishable from Rusin, so I'm hoping he gets traded.
