  1. We definitely had other choices. Guys move positions and DH before they get sent down, unless they've sucked. Villanueva got sent down because he sucked.
  2. I'm sure the Cubs have a really good idea of what they have in Hendricks, but I have no clue at all. An xFIP of anywhere from like 3.50 to 5.25 wouldn't surprise me. Can't wait to get actual pitch f/x data on him, so we can put the velocity guessing games to rest.
  3. I would bet he doesn't make the cut on most. Here's a 20 that was posted in the minor league forum today: Bryant, Baez, Soler, Tseng, Almora, Vizcaino, Edwards, Rivero, Vogelbach, Bruno, Russell, Alcantara, Schwarber, Torres, McKinney, Johnson, Hendricks, Stinnett, Jimenez, Underwood Who does Black kick out?
  4. I wouldn't. I want someone who slots into an ordinary team's top-10, so our top 20. This guy has been an above-average MLBer for three years now and he's under cost control for awhile yet.
  5. I'm about 80% sure Wada is going to play himself out of me caring about him within a couple of starts, just in time for Straily.
  6. It's weird to me that even with his lost 2 MPH on his fastball, Straily in MLB this year had a higher K-rate and higher swinging strike percentage than when he did in 2012 or 2013. I don't want to be that stathead fan who just says anomalies are variance, but his 16.4% HR/FB ratio this year just looks like a big ol' pile of fluke, and the rest of his peripherals are fine for a BOR starter.
  7. Arrieta has had so many partial seasons that it's hard to get a grasp on his innings by looking at his pages. He's actually thrown a lot more than I'd thought when I looked it up recently.
  8. I just like the idea of Castro at 2b, which plays to his strength (tons of range) and alleviates his weakness (having to make plays quickly).
  9. Arrieta's sure seemed more about getting his service time pushed back a year. I think Straily's already blown that for 2014, he's been down since May 10.
  10. 1. Baez 2. Baez-Russell-Castro 3b-SS-2b There, that seems easy enough.
  11. I can wait an extra three weeks to keep him an extra year. Or we could pay to have him that extra year rather than potentially cost us games in a year where we can't afford to throw away our slim margin for competition. If he's any good at all, you just paid like $20m for 15 games of him. Nobody does that. If you think there's any chance of doing that, just bring him up now to get extra time to adjust.
  12. Not particularly. For some reason I always imagine them in road games.
  13. It's a little scary to be counting on that every year. I'm not saying "We're definitely going to do it in 2015 buy your playoff tickets." But we've definitely got a real shot.
  14. We had the no. 1 rotation in fWAR made up of: 1) Some guy who was a mid-20s struggling reliever and was half the return for half a season of some guy we picked up as a 1/$5m FA the year before 2) A guy who a couple years ago was our mid-20s late-blooming reliever 3) A guy we picked up for 1/$6m this offseason 4) A guy we got for one year of a relief pitcher because the Reds didn't think he cracked their top 5 5) A 4/$52m free agent
  15. If they replicate their mid-tier FA SP magic and Bryant and Alcantara seamlessly transition into the majors the way you'd project from their AAA numbers, then we'd have a chance to compete next year with an $75m payroll. But granted those are two big ifs.
  16. you jackass you said it was next to impossible he'd see a call up before he missed 2 months with injury but you cover yourself with the "make up some at bats" phrasing  Bringing back a classic:
  17. I would guess Upton wins that easily.
  18. Confirmed pictures from Iowa dugout:
  19. Fourth-hand info: Someone on BCB posted that Brett tweeted that there were unconfirmed reports of hugs in the Iowa dugout.
  20. Guesses: 1) Hurt 2) Being saved for a call-up
  21. Kris Bryant just broke his wrist on a check swing, shattered his bat and a shard hit Javy in the eye. Hope you're happy.
  22. Wait until mid-March and then declare he's moving to RF and needs some time to acclimate.
  23. If we go on a win streak then for the sake of all that is holy nobody try to pass off a new class gif.
  24. I always assumed he'd need a little time to adjust there, but I never really considered what his normal numbers would look like if they end up being inflated further by the PCL. If he Brett Jacksons and loses 400 points of OPS between AAA and MLB, he's still an .800 OPS player.
