Alcantara didn't take SS from Castro, Baez didn't take it from Castro, and Russell is in AA. So until Russell moves up two levels and takes it from him, I wouldn't assume anything.

Between Bryant, Soler, Baez, Alcantara, Castro, Rizzo and Castillo, that's seven position players pretty much locked in. Objectively, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to consider a Coghlan/Ruggiano platoon for the 8th spot. But they've already used up all their "we have the resources but we're just going to go internally with whatever we have laying around" cards forever.

Question 1: It would really help, but I wouldn't call it an absolute necessity. Not getting one makes it a lot harder. Question 2: Not really, it's a pretty crappy class. If there were a 3b we *really* liked, I wouldn't mind doing that and pushing Bryant to LF.

It's not that the fans are dumber than any other sports' fans. It's that the sport does not lend itself well to their dumbness. Baseball is all about probability and small differences playing out over large samples. Those are two things that the human brain absolutely *sucks* at understanding intuitively.
