Avoiding 90 losses makes me happy. If I'm adding it up right, the Cubs draft 9th. I'm glad we screwed up our position and all those "no point in winning 73 games might as well pick at the top" dorks have to about-face and be happy about this. Holy crap Javy. 229 PAs of 41.5% K-rate. Young or not, it's hard to put into perspective how terrible that is. I would honestly be slightly surprised if he makes it through a full MLB season next year. Jorge Soler isn't likely as good as his .339 BABIP made him look, but Alcantara isn't as bad as his .261 made him appear. I'm looking forward to both being useful players next year. Holy crap we have so many resources going into the offseason. Few gaping holes, tons of open payroll space, more prospects than we can usefully hope to use. I'm not promising it will be good, but we have more potentially useful MLB pitching than we've had in a long time. I don't remotely trust the front office to do what it takes to make the team a full-blown contender next year. I suspect they'd rather win 82 games with a $70m payroll and glory in their amazing efficiency and "keeping their powder dry" than actually take some risks and invest some resources on an 89-team that may or may not work out. Like Rizzo, this should be a situation where it works out pretty well for us, but it's funny to me that our first huge contract (give or take a jxn) is going to be getting Theo's band back together and rewarding one of his buddies. Speaking of that, congratulations to Jed Hoyer for his fifth season GMing a major league team without ever putting together a playoff team.
